Default another fuel mileage post!

Hi, I just bough a 2007 f150 and I can't get over 16.5mpg average ( about 50/50 highway/city). It's a 4.2L with 5sp stick. the dealer told me that it would get 16-21. I expected to be averaging 18-19 since i baby it all the time and don't usually do over 70 on the highway. any ideas as to why my mpg's aren't better? I've only gone through 3 tanks of fuel so could it be that the engine isn't broken in yet? Seems like you guys with the v8's are doing better than me! any thoughts...

the truck is underpowered. That lil v6 is struggling to move that beast. You could have had a V-8

you are way underpower, your engine is struggling to move all the weight behind it .. I love the stickshift models, but I love the V8 more

yeah, it is underpowered, but the only way i could get a stick was to go with the v6. I was determined to get a standard since I have never owned one and I'm board with automatics. I also saved 2k going with this truck. anyway to bump up my mpg's without doing anything drastic?

underpower?!?!?! guys come on its a ford... get some type of bed cover nothing big or heavy just simple. the tail gate creates drag and leaving it down all the time is asking for someone or thing to hit it and looks like crap.. so a nice cover does help. and i dunno if you do but downshifting to slow down the truck rather then brakes raises the RPM cause the moter to use more gas for nothing... and if u really are worried about gas if the speed limit is 65 do it not 70 and if it is 55 even better remember after 55mpg )which is the highway tested speed that they rate the gas mileage on) will lower you mileage drastically... Hope this helps

That theory was proven wrong.. Mythbusters did 2 shows on it.. The tailgate up or down.. Tailgate up got better fuel mileage and they showed why. There is a vortex created in the bed of the truck that "pushes" the truck. Makes alot of sense too. I did it in my truck.. I noticed a .3 increase in mileage. not alot but it was in increase.

Default break in period

I have gotten between 13.55 and 16.98. however I have read that the engine gas mileage improves over time. anybody know about this??

I got the 2007 4.2L work truck. I love it. and I could care less about the gas mileage. I use it to work in.

I've seen that one.. I did notice better mileage a bit better.

Now to the v6 guy.. take of the intake reducer thingy.. at the end of the intake connected on the fender. Get a highflow air filter *K&N* or intake.. exhaust is another.. <-- i personally like the Poweraid TBS.. read around the forums and you'll find something good.

I gotta friend who has and 06 single cab f150 v6.. he getting bout 16-18 on an automatic.. its a STX model.. he only has exhaust and K&N filter..

Thanks for the info, I ordered a bed cover (I wanted one anyway). and I'll look into a high flow filter for it. I'll wait and see if it gets better after that.
