Default annoying noise under load

04 FX4, 5.4L supercrew.

While I have my foot in it, while in any gear and the rpms are up, it makes a noise that almost sounds like pinging. engine has a riser plate, and k&n filter/ intake. Im running reg gas, 87 octane. I can put it in nuetral and I dont get the same issue.

Am I hearing pinging? or is something else happening in the trans maybe? I only hear it when the windows are down and I there is someone beside me or I'm driving next to a concrete divider.

Does it sound like a lawn sprinkler? Tsst-tsst-tsst... If it does, it could be one of your exhaust manifold. Ford's weakness...

The riser plate you are referring to sounds like its a space and they are worthless ? is are you the second owner of the truck ,

Doesnt help in all cases but I would recommend that you take a vid or get a sound clip loaded.

Especially when you think it might be pinging/deteonation/knocking. Wouldnt want to be driving it.

It's definately not pinging, the noise became rapidly worse and had me worried for a bit but it was so loud there wasn't a chance it was pinging.

I'm almost positive it's a cat related issue, it sounds like an exhaust rattle but I have crawled underneath a couple times and cannot locate any loose exhaust components. Still only occurring when it's under load. It sounds like a small piece of steel bouncing around inside a can. It is however starting to drive me closer to drinking.

Oh, so it's only happening when under load?? Is it happening when you accelerate hard as well?? Does it sound like it's skipping a gear?? If it's that, it might be a cross at your driveshaft link... Just can't remember the right term for it. I had to get mine replaced on my 2002 F150, installed the ones with a grease point on them...

At higher rpm's you lose vacuum, could be your IWE's trying to engage.

Sounds like a cat rattle or pinging to me too... Try upping the octane to see if it goes away... If that doesn't change it 1 bit... The. I would suspect the cat....

I have that noise too. I hear it most, at the drive thru or next to the barrier on the road. I believe it's inside one of my cats. It mimics a loose heat shield or loose metal in a can.
I've been putting up with it for years, thinking I was gonna trade up, but I keep falling in love with my truck everytime I look at other ones. Think I'll just do it and post the result soon.
