All timing or try VCT solenoids first?
Gonna have some timing work done here in the next few months. My question is has anybody ever experience these exact issues and do you think it would be worth replacing the VCT solenoids first to see what difference that makes or just do it all? I've been detailing my issues for the last 6 months or so. 07 5.4 no issues when cold. No loss of power. Very very slight rough idle, nobody but me has ever noticed it. The only issues I can find is when warm, it does get the phaser knock a little bit. However when I am traveling very slow and only in gear if I give slight throttle and let off as the rpms are winding down it gets a significantly louder rattle only till the rpms level back off. What does everybody think?

Ain't the trick to unhook the VCT's and see if it runs better?

Yeah but can I unhook them on an 07 without removing the valve covers? I know you cant change them without removing the valve cover but can I unhook them?

disconnecting the VCT solenoids is a method used to see if a VCT system ISN'T returning the cams to base timing when you come to a stop light/sign after the engine warms up.
Many of us experience rough running, very low idle RPM and even stalling at stop lights but only after the engine is warmed up. It doesn't seem like you have this rough running/ stalling issue and are only dealing with noise - which you believe to be phaser noise. I'm not sure how good of a test disconnecting the VCT solenoids is for this symptom alone since the noise, even if it is the phasers, happens at base timing.

I'm aware of all this. I have read all the posts. I'm also 100% sure it has a very faint phaser noise the other noise that concerns me only happens as stated, low idle, warm, and as rpms are dropping to idle levels. Usually about the 800 rpm range. I thought maybe it could be the timing not properly returning to normal possibly caused by the solenoids not functioning properly. It is kind of a clack noise definitely affected by rpm as it slows down as the rpms do. Could the chains be slapping as the rpms are dropping? Ill try to get a video within the next week hopefully. That might help more.
