Default Advice on buying 5.4 ignition coils

I've posted about this before, but I have to say it again just to give a warning to some some facing a tune-up on their trucks. In October of 2015 I was facing a tune-up myself. I did some research and read quite a few threads here on this website on this subject on the best place to buy the needed parts and do the work. Several mentioned they had bought Ford Motorcraft coils and plugs from vendors on Amazon. I looked on the Amazon site and found what I thought was a good price on a set of 8 new Motorcraft coils, part number DG511. The parts were purchased from the vendor that goes by the name " Prices for the World". The parts came in Ford Motorcraft packaging and had the Ford part numbers stamped on the coils as well. So fast forward to the present day, here almost 2 years to the day and approximately 40,000 miles later,I'm replacing another of those coils. This time on number 3 cylinder,I've already replaced the coils on cylinder numbers 2,6,and 7,so this will be the fourth one I've replaced since the tune-up.That makes 4 out of the 8 I bought from the vendor mentioned have gone bad. I tried to e-mail these people and even tried to contact them by phone and got nowhere. So I want to give a word of advice to those facing a tune-up,I would sure be careful about trying to save a buck or two and instead buy my parts from a Ford dealer or reputable auto parts store before shopping them from the Amazon vendors.

Hindsight being what it is, do you now think they were counterfeits? Was the vendor US-based?

In trying to answer your questions, I gave $296.00 for the set of 8 coils. And yes,I do think they were counterfeits. As for the vendor,I could not tell you if they were in the US or not,I am thinking they were because I ordered them on the 22nd of October and I had the parts within a week or so. When the first one went bad I went to a Ford dealer and bought the first replacement. I compared the packaging of that one to what the originals I bought off Amazon came in,and I could not tell a difference. Now I know that it is possible to get a bad part now and then, but 4 out of 8,something smells awful fishy to me. Like I had said,I tried to contact the vendor by e-mail and phone and could not get a response. I have noticed that I can no longer find them as an auto parts vendor on Amazon ,at least the last time I tried. I guess it would not bother me so bad if it wasn't for the hassle and inconvenience to change the damn things out.

File a claim with Amazon. Idk what they could do to help, but it's a start. These could also be "defect" purchases that the vendor bought and resold. This would be a reason you got them at a lower price. If it helps any, some people on here run a Chinese set from Amazon that has been showing good quality. I cant remember off the top of my head which ones they were...perhaps someone will chime in.

I don't remember the brand, but yeah...I paid 50 bucks for 8. Almost going on three years now with 0 issues.

I have a 2001 Grand Marquis and when I needed a coil I bought a full set of cheapo's from Ebay for $34 for all 8 coils. This was 3 years ago. One year ago, one of those coils started misfiring so I bought another set of 8 for $37 on ebay and changed out the bad one and still have 7 left for spares. If you can and don't mind changing your own coils, it's easy to do the math on this.

I have also wasted big money on oem coils from the dealer that crapped out after a few years.
