adding flex fuel to an 04
Is it possible to run an 04 5.4 as a flex fuel setup? Not sure what all I'd need besides a sensor, some lines maybe, and a new filter. Just wondering if it's possible or not. I searched but couldn't find any threads.
It is not cheaper in the long run. First, you get less MPGs with the crap. Second, (I was told this by a Ford mechanic) you have to change your fuel filters about every 500 miles as the ethanol cleans the "varnish" that the more pure gas leaves and thus plugs your filter. It also is murder on your rubber engine parts. Crap gas.
Mine is an 06 5.4L In reading the ford literature here's some of the differences: E85 is harder on the engine, if you use it at least 50% of the time, you have to do oil changes every 3K. The PCM is programmed differently, all rubber/metal that touches E85 is different than a reg 5.4L and flex fuel have different spark plugs than a normal 5.4L
Yes, it can give you about 10 extra HP, but to me the other issues are not worth the hassle. I have never put E85 in mine and don't plan to anytime soon.
In my neck of the woods E85 is only about 75 cents cheaper, not worth the decrease in gas mileage (15-25%) to me.

Sure you can run E85 in your 04 if you want to burn a exhaust valve out, because you will go lean and throw the check engine light. The fuel maps are not big enough for E85
Why would you want to run E85 anyways?
I tried E85 in my work van normally gets 13 MPG. On E85 I got 9 MPG that is a 30% drop is E85 30% cheaper than gas? Being gas is around $2 E85 would have to be less than $1.40. And that is if you own a flex fuel truck
