97 F150 using oil
Hi, I own a 97 f150 4.6 stepside. It has 121,000 miles on it. I change my oil every 3000 miles and it runs just as smooth as the day I bought it. The motor is spec. for 5w30 and I used Valvoline 5w30 for most of its life. This year it started using about .5 to .75 of a quart of oil every 2500 miles. I put some Motorcraft 5w30 and it used a whole quart. Right now I have Castrol GTX 5w30 to see if it makes any difference.
Question: Is this typical of a 4.6 engine?
Are there any other oils yall have tried that reduce usage. fyi, my eninge does not smoke or have any major leaks.

As this is a Forum of very little help but alot of slams, why would you post a 97 issue in the 2004 to 2008 section? Just messing with you. Your consumption at this time is different by not excessive. Was wondering why you changed brands? Deffinately keep an eye on it, could be signs of things to come.

I would rec. to start using a high mileage oil. I have a 97 with 250,000 and it dosent lose any oil. I guess I am lucky though. I also use Royal Purple. Valveoline makes a damn good High Mileage oil, and I know you can get 5W30 at Autozone.

Holy Crap, I guess I did pick the wrong section, sorry. Just wanted to get some other experiences with 4.6 owners and oil consumption. Maybe I will try a high mileage oil, just wasn't for sure if they really worked. Thanks
