Default 6 speed tranny conversion??

Totally hypothetical question, would it be logical to do a 6 speed conversion on a 2004 - 2008 f-150 with the 5.4 triton? I have actually found some companies that make 6 speed trannys to replace the 4 speeds in these trucks. I’m curious if this would be as great of an improvement as it sounds or not? I feel like 2 extra gears would be very nice on my ‘04 5.4 triton.

The cpu wouldn't work with that, not sure how you could get one to read old motor and next gen transmission.

Anything is possible with money, but but not practical.

That’s what I figured would be the case. I just thought I’d ask. Haha

My friend has a new truck with a 6-speed, and he complains all the time about how it shifts and is hunting for a gear. I'll take the 4-speed.

Really? I’ve heard good things about fords 6 speeds. But I guess that could make sense. My beef with the 4 speed is that I feel like all the speed of the truck happens when the overdrive kicks in. With that being said, when I tow, and turn that o/d off, I feel like I have to freaking stomp on the thing to go over sixty. But maybe that’s more normal than I’m thinking. This is my first half ton truck.

This company makes shift controllers so you can do 4 to 6 speed swaps, and they're currently working on a 4 to 10 speed swap using a Crown Victoria.

Also, we have a few recent six speed Ford automatics at work. They're perfectly good. (They're F-350's and an F-450, though)

How do these shift controllers work?? I would get the one that matches my current tranny or the one I’d want?

You would get one for the transmission you want. They work by connecting the transmission to that box. I believe there is a jumper cable for an input from the ECM.
