5.4L engine question
A topic I'm sure that has been discussed to death, but I'm having trouble finding a definitive answer. I'm looking to replace the 5.4L engine in my 08 F150, and a buddy gave me one from a 2010 that he's had lying around for a bit. When I went to order parts, my parts guy told me that Ford had said the engine wouldn't fit my truck, that the 2009 and 2010 year 5.4L are different engines, but they were not 100% positive either. So I talked to a couple other people, scrap yard and engine rebuilder, and all they said is it wouldn't fit as well, but when scouring the forums for an answer, the few threads I've found said it will fit.
So I guess the question is, does anyone know will the 2009 or 2010 5.4L fit the earlier 2004 to 2008 years as a direct replacement? And if not, just for my curiosity, what changed in the later years?
Just want to make sure before ordering any parts for an engine that won't work. TIA for any info.

Just a guess here, but there are probably differences in hardware like the intake manifold and sensors, but I'd bet that the long block is the same.
so.. if you have to two side by side it might be one more obvious what all you would need to swap.

I had the 5.4 engine in my 2004 replaced about 3 years ago. At the time I asked my mechanic if I could replace it with an earlier, pre-variable valve timing engine. His answer was Yes-but. The but part was the electronic/electrical issues associated with engine control and housekeeping issues. The conversion would add a lot of cost and may end up not being reliable.
I accepted his recommendation and went ahead with a direct replacement remanufactured engine from PowerTrain. I am very pleased with the result. The truck has been dead-nuts reliable and runs strong and silent.
