Default 5.4L crate engines so expensive, comparitively... why?

Does anyone happen to know why the 5.4L Triton crate engines, specifically the 3V are so more expensive than, say, the 5.4L 4V Tritons that are about $1000 cheaper?

I'm thinking because of the laws of supply and demand. These engines are troublesome and you see a lot where they need to be replaced. Ford can charge more for them because more people need them. Granted I don't know if there is anything else much different about them besides the heads, but the extent of my knowledge it seems like a good explanation

I think it's because they're so hard to find. I have one that I bought 3 years ago for 4500 out of Atlanta. It took six months to track one down

Hmm, I would probably make the new 5.0 work before giving a lot for another 3v. Has anyone done a 5.0 swap on a 04-08? The 5.0 can be found pretty commonly I believe.

What is everyone paying for crates from ford?
It's crossed my mind that in another few years driving I may need one.. Trucks got 138miles now.. I think I would be comfortable paying somewhere in the area of 5 for a ford crate
