5.4 Manifold Replacement
I'm having a shop replace coils and plugs next week. My truck is a 2005 FX4, I had the cam failure in 2012 and chose to do a new factory 5.4 replacement. The shop is telling me the early generations of the 5.4 were prone to manifold issues and I should have it replaced. But they can't tell me if that was true with the 2012 5.4. Anyone have any insight to when manifold changes were made with the 5.4?
That seems to me to have very little overlap with the ignition coils so I don't know why they're trying to sell that like a " while your in there" .
In other words it's been fine for 12 years now, so if it ain't broke don't fix it.
In fact I wouldn't bother changing the coils. I'd do plugs and new rubber boots on the original coils.

Wasn't an up sell deal, he commented that he has seen plastic manifolds and it should be an aluminum? So he said when they had it if it was the plastic he thinks it should be replaced. I play beer league hockey with him, runs a 3rd generation shop, so he isn't trying to get more out of me.
Why keep the original coils? I'm having a miss under load when going over 45mph. I assumed it was a bad coil. And the plugs have 100k on them now so figured just do all 8 with fresh hardware and be done with it.

OEM coils very rarely fail so I prefer to keep them and just replace boots for less than the price of 1 OEM coil.
If you are going new OEM that's up to you, new aftermarket coils are probably not going to be as good as old OEM coils.
YMMV

- are they suggesting you replace intake manifold or exhaust manifolds? Regardless, if you aren’t having problems, and they can’t articulate an actual problem why would you/they change it?
- you likely have a reman’d 2005 5.4 (installed in 2012) and not a ‘2012 f150’.
I've not seen an intake for this generation f150 that's not plastic.

- oem coils are the best and typically do not fail, just replace boots/springs (maint items) and reuse coils (when doing spark plug job).

Was told that it could be a faulty coil and that's why it doesn't throw a code. And thus not being able to tell which hole is causing the issue. I believe he said he would use Motor Craft parts, is that a Ford brand? He said it was $100 a hole for parts so guessing the coils are like $80 a throw. Appreciate everyones feedback.
Please keep in mind I'm not very mechanical. And this truck isn't a daily driver, dump runs, landscaping, and picking up big stuff at the store.

Originally I thought this missing issue was an injector but no codes, had them cleaned and the problem is still there but only in certain high load situations. Like when going to pass a car on a 2 lane road, only lasts for a second. And if I lock out OD it doesn't happen or very minor. And its not the highway gear, proved that when I replaced the trans.

If it were a COP you would most likely get a DTC... do plugs/boots and springs and go from there. There are no 2012 trucks with a 5.4 3V that I know about. Believe last year was 2010. Do not throw away $800 worth of OEM coils... mail them to me please.
