Default Is the 5.4 3v a fail?

I mean I'm reading so much negative stuff about these 3v motors. Phasers, spark plugs, clogged oil passages, tensioner seals blowing piston slap ect. I mean wtf. My truck has 164k on it yes it sound like duramax diesel at idle but goes away with rpm ect. I feel like a f-ed up by buying my 04 fX4. So much bad.

Had some problems, but it's hard to judge them just based off here considering there's a gazillion of them out there, the percentage of owners on here is very small. Plenty of good ones. Just treat it right and hope for the best.

No problems with mine and she's at 194k and quiet as when she was new. Like mentioned above, a very small percentage of 3v owners are on the forums. Go to any other car/truck forum and you will see the same thing, people generally join a forum to find solutions to a problem they are having with their vehicle.

Thats good.
The engine has problems, like all others do. Keep up on maintenance, and pay attention to what people say around here about repairs and other preventative stuff and you'll be fine.

Here's what the previous owner told me on the 04 fx4 screw with 5.4 I just bought. He replaced plugs, coil packs, alternator, belt, shocks/struts, springs, brakes, tires, tie rods ball joints. He said nothing about cam phasers ect. But so far it's not loud at idle just kinda sounds like a diesel lol. What do you think the chances are in the 164k miles it's had phasers done?
