Just had a very similar issue last Thursday. Put my truck in 4wd and when I took it out I was getting a "grinding" sound while driving, that would go away if I put it back in 4wd. I found my 4wd IWE solenoid and vacuum lines going to it clogged with mud and debris. I replaced it and cleaned out the vacuum lines but it was still doing it.

I jacked the truck up and found out it was the passenger side making noise so took the hub actuator off and found it had corroded and basically had started to disintegrate. I bought one at advance auto for $80 and replaced it and it was good as new. Hope that helps!

Here's a pic of how bad mine was!

Oh wow that is bad! I did just replace the hub and the hub actuator but maybe it's faulty already I guess I'll find out when I tear it apart!
