Default 4x4 clunk

We got the first accumulated snow this morning so I decided to test, for the first time in traction limited situation, the 4x4 capabilities of my "new-to-me" used F150 Crew.

So this morning I pull out of the driveway and gas it a bit and it breaks loose like a good rear wheel drive vehicle should. I switched it to 4x4hi and gassed it again, and like it was advertised, took off like a champ. Then I decided to test the ABS since I have not had an good opprotunity to fully trial that, so I slammed on the brakes and the front end errupted with ABS chatter and just before the truck stoped there was a loud "Clunk" from the front Left corner, and as I pulled away there were no noises, but the wheel seemed to pull to the left (may have been precieved) so I did not try it again.

This is my first 4x4 vehicle so I am still getting used to all the 4x4 neuances, like no dry pavement, no slow corners, etc. I have not looked underneath yet to make sure nothing is broke but I was wondering if that is a common noise for that situation or if I should take it in (luckily still under factory warranty)

Thanks for the Help

It's not uncommon for the drivetrain to clunk or pop a bit when you're in 4wd, especially if you're turning and have decent traction. It's just the wheel hop as it releases driveline bind.

Its normal to clunk into 4wd. Maybe it wasnt totally engaged at first and engaged when you stopped.
