Default 4ws low on road

A family member borrowed my truck 04 fx4. Come to find out the **** was on 4low when they came back. They said they don't remember if it said 4high or 4 low on the dash. They also said they never took it out of D when they turned the **** to 4low keep in mind this was going 45+ mph on a street road.
From my understanding, it will not shift into 4low without being put into neutral first. So if they only put it in 4high.
How much damage do you think was done? I freaked out and went to a mud pit to see if 4wd still worked but couldn't really tell i think its still good.

They only had it in 4 high unless they put it in neutral and they would notice it driving very strange.

While driving on dry pavement in 4x4 isn't good they likely didn't hurt anything.

If they turned it directly to 4lo then it will not even engage 4 wheel drive.

The truck will not go to 4hi if 4 lo is the first selection.

FWIW my father got my truck "stuck" in 4lo (more like he didn't know how to disengage it) and drove to my house from camp!! We are talking winding paved roads and highways with an hour of driving.

No damage to speak of.

Last time I loaned out mine, came back stinking of fish and had a huge scrap across the bed. Luckily it was my old 96 "beater" Z71... some people....

Damn haha those old trucks will run for forever. I remember not too long ago, buddy of mine got stuck out in some woods. I went to go pull him out just to see my clear coat scratched to ****, made him spend the whole day with me polishing.
