Unhappy 4WD issues

2006 FX4, 60,000miles, Evo, K&N (nothing special to toy with tranny)

And my story/quandry begins:
I havent used the 4WD in a few months. The other day when I went to engage it (on the fly) nothing happened. (And by nothing I mean I was going 30mph, and couldnt physically tell and NO LIGHTS on the dash lit). I tried toggling in and out of 4W High, 2W, 4WH, 2W for a block or two (with no response) and then pulled into a parking lot.

I went through 2W, 4WH, 4WL, numerous times.
(Yes, I tried them all while I was in P, N, D. except 4WL (N only)) And I did everything by the books.

It finally tengaged into 4WL (light on dash), but then I was stuck in 4WL - yikes... I drove around the parking lot, turned the truck off, on, N, off, etc. finally got back to 2W.

Today I tried playing again. I got it into 4WH, but with no effin light on (I could tell by the way it drove)!!! So....with the truck in P and door open. I toggled from 2W to 4WH. I can hear the gears flop, but the light never comes on. (Keep in mind 'hearing the gears' means there is a slight noise, not a disasterous grind or anything)

But the truck was stuck with 4WH engaged...I could tell when I backed out of the space. I finally got it into 2W (**** knows how?) and now here I sit threading.

It is under warranty, and I plan on taking it in early next week, but I wanted to ask the GURUs here. You guys are always insightful and educated...... I have done nothing new or wrecked it or ANYTHING since it last worked properly. FYI.

Sorry.
There were about 5 other posts that describe the same issue about senoids, and hubs, and vacuums, and basically taking it to Ford because all the trucks 06 and older have the same issue.

To FORD I go....

Yup, it's a common problem. after a summer of not using 4wd, mine wouldn't do anything when I tried it for the first snow. After cycling the switch many times over the space of a week it finally came on.

Seems that if I don't use it for a while it gets bawlky. I've got in the habit of turning it on and off every time I start the truck. It's much more relyanle now but it still don't wanna every once in a while

When you go to the dealer, ask to have this done also. it happens to many '06 trucks, unfortunatly after the warranty is done for most.

  • INTERMITTENT IWE NOISE, 4WDH LIGHT AND/OR 4X4 SYSTEM INOPERATIVE, DTCS - C1979 AND C1980
Publication Date: April 18, 2006

FORD:
2004-2006 F-150
LINCOLN:
2006 Mark LT

ISSUE:

Some 2004-2006 F-150 and 2006 Mark LT 4X4vehicles built before 4/24/2006 may exhibit a noise in 2 wheel drive from the front Integrated Wheel Ends (IWE) and/or the 4X4 system being inoperative. The IWE solenoid may have ingested water and passed it to the IWE system causing water contamination in the vacuum portion of the system. A shorted IWE solenoid can set the codes C1979 and C1980. If either code is present, the 4WDH light will be inoperative.

I would like to know what your dealer finds. I prob'ly need to do the same to my truck.

good luck,
Bob the Fool

feel lucky mines an 04 and ive dropped around 1400 bucks in mine. new actuators both sides, new hub Passenger side (around 400 itself) 2 or 3 solenoids, check valves. Honestly i love the truck but there hub system sucks. Ive looked around and emailed about some good ol fashion manual hubs.
