Default 4.6 Enough or... not.

Hello, I didnt find any special section to introduce myself in the forum. Im Fred I live in the border town of Tijuana Mexico, Im 20 years old.

I got my first F-150 mexican bought called "Lobo" spanish for Wolf hehe.

Problem is I feel the 4.6 V8 in it has a hard time moving the truck unloaded, its a Supercrew 4 door 4X2 short bed, with a 4 speed auto, Tijuana is a very hilly place and when Im going uphill at 60 Kph (about 40 mpg) the truck kicks down and revs to 3000 RPM just to climb the hill, now is it me or this engine cant handle the weight of this vehicle, not even my Cherokee XJ revved that much to climb a hill.

Thanks in advance!

Good engine. Not nearly the troubles that the 5.4 has had. I'd not worry about it other than add an automatic transmission cooler to keep the tranny temps lower, and provide longer service.

I agree with the OP. I test drove a couple F150s before I decided on what I wanted, and the 4.6 was an absolute dog. I have the 5.4 in my truck and it gets out of it's own way(way better than the 4.6), but it's def not a rocket ship either.

I think the biggest issue with acceleration in these trucks is the transmission ratios and the gearing. I have the 3.55 rear. My old S-10 would have destroyed my new truck in a race.

My dad gave it to me as a "gift" (he got a mustang) , I feel its a little sluggish when accelerating, and yes Ive heard horror stories about the 5.4 blowing spark plugs etc. Is there anything I can do to improve acceleration in this Pickup Truck? I dont wwant a race truck I just think its kind of a dog when it comes to a hill.

BTW, do any of you guys know how do I know if my 4.6 is a 2V or 3V?

Thanks in advance and sorry for asking too many questions.

A heavy truck with a small motor isnt going to feel like its got alot of power.

A programmer like an Edge Evolution will help wake it up a little and a set of gears will help too.

What kind of gears would you recommend? I think some guy in San Diego told me to get 3.55s , by the way I have stock 17 inch weels.
Ive been thinking of getting all of these things

  • CAI
  • Exhaust
  • Edge Programmer
Do you think I might be able to squeeze 20 30 HP with that?

I doubt you see 20 to 30 hp. Get a programmer, it will change your transmission shifting and how high it revs. This will be the best upgrade to help. I have the 4.6 and feel that it is plenty and a solid platform. The motor is a 2v. The engine isn't meant for hp, but it has quite a bit if torque st lower rpms. I think like 90% of the torque is available at 2900 rpms...

And you already have at least 3.55 gears. You either have 3.55 or 3.73. I'm going to say you have 3.55

Id go with 4.10's.

Youre not supposed to combine a CAI and the Edge tuner, it makes the truck run lean from what Ive heard.

Ive got an Edge on my 5.4 and to me it woke the truck up a bit. Its quicker off the line from a stop now and the transmission doesnt upshift too quick like it did stock.

No idea about hp gains but most likely only a few and not 20-30.
