I went from a STX 4.6 to a FX4 5.4. After I replaced my VCT solenoids, I couldn't be happier. The 4.6 is a damn good engine but is painfully weak. I can't imagine going back to it. I will say if you get a 5.4 be prepared to at least replace the solenoids. It's worth it though. My engine doesn't click or tick at all. It's silent now.

The things with 4.6 tho they are impossible to screw up the engines they may be slow but they last forever

I had a 4.6 that blew a piston at 40000 miles. So it's all ymmv. My 5.4 is so much more powerful and gets the exact same mileage as my old 4.6. I haven't even gotten a tuner or CAI for my 5.4 an it already matches my 4.6 in mileage and blows it out of the water in power. And yes my 4.6 had a air raid CAI, exhaust, and tune. It's was a 2wd regular cab short box to boot. I like both engines just feel the 4.6 is lacking a bit.

Had both motors
Yes, 5.4 is more powerful but 4.6 has less issues. Maybe get a 09-10 model with the 5.4? By then, most of the issues were resolved.

If you get a 4.6, make sure it has the 3.73 gears, makes all the difference. My current truck 4.6 has the 3.73 as did my 5.4. I really don't notice that big of a power difference but the only time I do is when I'm towing a 4,000 boat, 5.4 did it better.

i have owned both also, the one i have now is an 07 lariat with a 5.4, my old truck was a 98 with a 4.6 , both of them are good motors, 4.6 has a little more torque, but as far as power and acceleration, 5.4 all day long !

4.6 but only in an 08 model because they almost had 250hp vs 230~ for the 04-07 models.

I have an 08 4.6 and it has plenty of power. Its a CCSB and I have towed 8k with no issues.

I think it really depends on what you'll be doing with the truck. Horsepower and torque ratings aside, remember that it's also about the power delivery and torque curve. While I can't comment on the 4.6 2V, the 5.4 3V has decent power with light loads but with heavy loads it definitely could use a lot more juice. An aftermarket exhaust, tuner and supercharger options are viable if you find that the 5.4 3V needs more power. I haul a heavy tool trailer regularly on both my F-150 and my Ram 1500 and the Triton falls far behind the Hemi in power. The nice thing about the Triton though is that it keeps in going in mid to high RPM range while the Hemi dies off after 4000RPM and 120km/h.

I have an 07 4.6 2wd. Towing is great even though it is a smaller engine. I towed the largest enclosed uhaul trailer when I moved into my apartment and it was full and I didn't notice it behind me unless I was going up a steep hill (I had overdrive off though). The 4.6 isn't as powerful as the 5.4 of course but I'm happy with it. A tuner wakes the truck up A LOT, best mod I did.

It sounds like I've used mine for the same things you will use yours. Hunting, occasional towing, daily driver and my 4.6 has performed great.

I would suggest getting 3.73 gears if you can. Mine is 3.55 gears with 33" tires and they are ok. One more thing I would suggest and would say is a necessity IMO for what you will be doing is a limited slip/locking differential. Open diffs are no good for what you will be doing. I wish I had checked what mine was before I bought it.

Just look at the details of the trucks you are looking at and see which one you feel best about driving.

^ It's all about the details. Open diff. and 3.55's on mine. L.S. and 3.73 would have been nice. I have the 4.6. It is a good motor, just lacks the torque I wish it had. No big difference in gas mileage.
