Default 2008 XLT Engine/Trans Swap

Greetings all,

Almost two years ago I inherited a 2008 F150 4.6L. This is the first pickup I have ever owned and I honestly don't think ill ever not own a pickup for as long as I live. That being said I received this pickup for 1$ with 208,000 miles on it and I know that this vehicle has had proper maintenance throughout its life and is sentimental to me. It's still currently in decent condition however, when the time comes I am thinking about whether I should either swap or remanufacture the engine. If I do swap, what engine should I replace it with? I also wanted to switch my auto out for a manual tranny. Just wanted to hear from y'all and see what would be the best course of action for this undertaking. I plan to switch the engine and tranny at the same time.

I was assuming he was asking what he should do when the engine/trans finally do give out. with 208k miles.. He will probably start hitting some issues within 50k-100k more miles. Give or take a little.

I'd say it would depend on what motor you have in it now? I'd take the 5.4 over the 4.6 just for the extra power. So if you have a 5.4 in it currently. I'd say Swap it out for another 5.4 if you get a good deal. I'd also say the same for the manufactured engine.

All in all I'd price it out. Post here what prices you have found and go from there. One nice thing about getting a re-manufactured is that it's essentially brand new. 0 miles. But there is always that little worry in the back of your head wondering if you're gonna have issues. However most re-manufactured engines have some sort of warranty on them.

Personally: I'd go with a re-manufactured engine with 0 miles. Only because I don't trust other people on how they treat there trucks. I've seen people drive there trucks 20-30k without oil changes and wonder why they have problems.... lol

He currently has a 4.6. If he swaps it out for the 5.4, he will need to get another PCM, as the 4.6 PCM has a completely different engine management system program over the 5.4. The engine wiring harness will need to be changed out as well.
Beginning some time in 2007, Ford used the same automatic transmission in the 4.6 and 5.4, so that would not be an issue.
