2008 5.4 pinging
Help! 2007 F-150 pings and hesitates since new. Taken to dealer twice and they are too lazy to spend more than 10 minutes on it. Still not right. Tried 91 octane with 2 tanks and still pings and hesitates. Pings mostly at around 2,000 RPM under slight load such as going up inclines. I know that I have a while to go on my warranty, but if I wanted pinging, I would have bought a diesel. Please respond if anyone has info that I can pass on to the dealer. Thanks in advance!

you are supoosted to put 87 octane in a 5.4 Liter f-150 just as you would in the 4.6 liter also!.. ive never understood why people do that... doesnt higher octane just burn hotter... why put that in when our engines are built to drink 87....?? now i dont know if thats your problem but i wouldnt put 91 oct much in my truck.... just in case

Pinging
I have about 7,000 on my truck now and have run on 87 EXCEPT for the 2 tank experiment. Nothing improved. Efficiency is higher when using the lowest grade without pinging. My truck also hesitates when accelerating from about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle in second gear. Dealer said they checked timing. Maybe a lean cylinder?

From what the service manager said was that there were no error codes so he couldn't isolate the problem. He said he drove it and could not duplicate the problem. I went through this with him twice. I am going to an engine tuner tomorrow where he is going to do a before and after with HP and torque. He guarantees to take care of the problem. All I specified is the I want to continue to run 87 octane and get rid of my pinging. Extra HP and or torque would be a bonus. I will let you know how it turns out, hopefully it will be positive.

Don't waste your money on high octane gas.
These trucks aren't designed to run on it. High octane gas does nothing unless the timing is advanced.....otherwise, it's worthless unless you are running higher compression or a supercharger/turbocharger, etc.
It sounds to me that you could have a lean condition. I'd be willing to bet that a custom tune would do the trick, but you should be fine to begin with. Have you done any mods to the airbox, etc.?

No mods, completely stock except for a 2" leveling lit. I only tried the 91 octane as a test. Having a tuner put it on a dyno with before and after results. I will let every one know how it turns out.
