Default 2007 F150 5.4 p0018

Truck started with a rough idle and down on power, check engine light for a P0018. It’s had a slight rattle when cranking so I’m thinking it’s time to go ahead and do a timing kit. Before I tear it down is there another items I could check that may cause this code?

so far I have unplugged the VCT solenoids while idling and manually activated them with 12v and the truck immediately almost stalls. Pretty sure this means they are not stuck causing my issue.

I’m at 212k miles with unknown history other than a bank 1 cam and follower replacement at 199k.

Low oil pressure, low oil level
Incorrect weight of oil
With that many miles, you might be better off replacing the engine
That said, I would do the timing job if you can do it yourself
Use all Ford parts

If you do a timing job make sure you clean the oil pan AND the oil pump pickup screen.

Yes. Get a bluetooth OBDII reader and something like Torque Pro for your phone or Forscan for Windows on a laptop. Get live data and look up VCTADV and VCTADVERR for both banks on a warmed up engine at idle. All should be around zero.

Tore it down and confirmed my suspicions…. The drivers side timing chain had a small piece break off and it obviously got pulled around the cam gear causing the chain to contact the valve cover and jump a tooth. All the parts arrived today and in the process of reassembling now.

If you have any missing pieces of plastic at all you should drop the oil pan and clean it and any bits of plastic from the oil pump pickup screen.
