2007 5.4 4x4 needs help
Hello all, I have a 07 Screw Lariat 4x4 149,000 miles on it. For over a year I have had the classic trans studder at 40 to 50 mph and going up hill. I had only one code and that I have a misfire in number 8. According to Autozone. So I saved up and bought new plugs and coils and attempted to do it myself but I broke the first one off and took it to the Westway Ford here. They put new plugs and packs on. They call and tell me that there then is a misfire on cylinder number 4 and wanted to do some tests to figure it out. They did a compression test and it was ok and they did flow test on the injector and it was ok. They then wanted to do a diagnostic on the PCM. They told me that the PCM was bad and that I needed a new one for $1100 and $600 labor. I said no thanks and brought the truck home. It does have a constant mis and vibration. Trans studders at all speeds now. I replaced the PVC valve today and cleaned the TB, following procedures to relearn the throttle response. I finally got the code to night that cylinder 4 is misfiring. My question does this sound right the PCM doing this to only one cylinder and that only 8 was the problem and now after plugs and packs been done then a different cylinder is missing. If you feel or know it's the PCM is there a preferred aftermarket brand that's cheaper. I saw the part I need at Flagship one for allot cheaper than FOMoCo and I could do it myself. Just wanting my truck to not vibrate all the damn time and act normal. Any advice would be appreciated.
DO NOT ORDER FROM FLAGSHIP ONE!!!!!!!!!!! They are crooks and have ripped-off many a member on this forum alone.
Why do you question the dealer that the PCM is bad? Did they do you right on the plugs and coils? PCM's go bad from time to time. You have had a studder for over a year and "Just wanting my truck to not vibrate all the damn time and act normal".....let the dealer fix it and be done. The PCM will come with a warranty and your truck will run correctly again.

You could always go to another dealer for a diagnosis, to see if it matches that of Westway Ford.

Well I'll check around. The cost of the new PCM is unreal. Westeay wants $1100 and I can not seem to find it cheaper on line like say amazon or rock atuto. I would like Motor Craft part I'm just looking for it cheaper.

So they fixed the misfire on 8 and created one on 4? I would check for spark on 4, pull the plug and inspect that, make sure the connectors to the coil and injector on 4 are seated properly, check for broken wires, etc.
Will do. They did a check they said they knew that they are getting spark and did a flow test for injector and it passed then a diagnostic on the PCM and of course the PCM was what was wrong but they also still wanted to replace the injector as well. I just don't have great faith in dealerships.

Yeah it's best to double check what you can. It has spark?... It has fuel?...It won't fire and the PCM is bad? It might be something simple like they broke the new spark plug installing it. This can happen for any number of reasons... it was dropped, banged, torqued improperly, or if there is excessive carbon in the cylinder bore below the threaded area.
