2006 Squeal Scratch Screech in Reverse
Hey Everyone -
I drive a 2006 XLT 4x4 with the 5.4L, V-8 motor. The truck has 102,000 miles.
I am noticing a squealing/screeching/scratching noise from my truck - like metal rubbing against metal. I think that I first noticed the noise while creeping in traffic, but I couldn't be sure because of the other cars nearby. After later confirming that the noise was definitely coming from my truck, I laid down near the truck today and had someone reverse past me. The noise is loudest and, therefore, seems to be coming from where the drive shaft and u-joint connects with the real axle housing.
The noise is definitely more prominent while moving in reverse, but I have begun to hear it more frequently in drive now too. As I accelerate, the noise becomes intermittent and, sometimes, goes away entirely. But, as I begin to stop, depressing the brake, the scratching noise comes back. When the truck isn't moving, however, the unusual noise can't be heard.
I saw some other posts from owners who seemed to be having similar issues. People seemed to think that the noise was evidence of a u-joint problem. I asked an old school mechanic, however, who said squealing/scratching was not* a typical indication of u-joint failure.
Let me know your thoughts. I'm taking it to have it looked at tomorrow. I'll re-post what the mechanic has to say.
Thanks,
B

I have the same sort of noise, but mine seemed to be coming from the front drivers side wheel. I jacked up front wheel to see if there was any play from top to bottom like you would have with a hub failure, but it seemed tight. Not sure if it is a brake issue or just the first sign of the hub going bad.
