Question 2006 odometer question

i just purchased a 2006 F150 XLT it was a repo from out of state the original owners title shows the mileage when it was purchased new , all other paperwork show the mileage as blank. I'm sure it has over 100k on it because there is a worn spot on the seat and brake pedal. Everthing works except the little space where the odometer is it is blank. i have read several forums on this problem and some say the mileage is stored in the odometer and some say in the computer. i want to try to put a new on in to see if it will show the true mileage (for my own benefit).
My question is ,after reading other forums on this, can i just change it out myself, or does it have to go to the dealer to be reflashed ?? i don't want to change it and then the truck might not start back because of the PATS system. any info would help. thanks.

To answer your question, yes you can change out the cluster yourself with a different one, but it will show the mileage of the vehicle the new cluster came out of. So if you want the correct mileage of YOUR truck to show on the display then you need to have the dealer reflash the computer.

Check out this thread on swapping clusters out:

Or what your problem most likely is the lcd display screen needs to be pulled apart and clean up the contacts on it. I bet that would fix it.

Check out this thread on fixing the blank odometer lcd screen.

thanks for those links. i will try to take mine apart and clean the contacts first, if that doesnt work i'll change the cluster, since i don't have to worry about the PATS system. thanks again..
