Quick way to check it is this- once it's warned up put it in drive hold the brake and give it some gas. If it ticks its most likely the manifold leak. It won't tick if its in neutral and u just rev it... The engine needs to be under a load(driving). Also driving along a wall will make the tick louder. The tick resonates off it...
This is my situation exactly. In neutral, no major tick except for on startup on the passenger side. Under load the ticking begins. I'll look into fixing the manifold leak! Thanks for the great information.

Most times one of the manifold bolts/studs break and that's where the leak is.... I had mine fixed and it was like I had new truck! Peace and quiet(other than my flow master singing!)

A weird noise my truck used to make idling or loaded like you say turned out to be my front skid plate.

I initially thought it was my exhaust, so I went through, checked all my heat shields and such to no avail.

My skid plate wasn't really loose, but wasn't tight either. I loosened all the bolts off and made sure it wasn't strained at all and tightened them back up and voila it was gone.

Another thing that's bothered me in the past has been stones in the cross-members.

My transmission was also doing as you said. Went and got a filter/oil Change, and it went away.

on my o6 scab, i had that ticking in the dash. I found it to be the plastic piece in front of the driver with the black oval that has the led in it. I removed that and put essentially weather stripping all around it. installed it and no noise now!! if you do it make sure the interior is fairly warm of you will break tabs off, and cause yourself a whole lot of cursing...lol
