Default 2006 5.4 Rough Idle

Ok.. I'll try and make this as short as possible with as much detail...

I've got a 06' f150 lariat 4x4. This truck has 116k on it. With an engine that has 86k on it. First engine was yanked do to spun cam bearings.

2 months ago my CIL came on. I stoped in and had the codes read. Said cyl #3 was misfiring. I purchased a coil pack, and installed. Since spark plugs were less than 10k miles on them. Every thing was fine then..

One month later, I go to pass someone and when it downshifts it acts like the tranny is slipping. I figure tranny is going. Call my BIL who's a mechanic. He said it's not the tranny but the engine is misfiring or not running properly. He said check the MAF sensor. I cleaned it and put back in. Truck then begins to run like crap, CIL then comes on. I buy new MAF sensor and that doesn't do anything. Just gets worse.

I drop off at ford dealer. They call me up. Said misfire on all cylinders on Bank 2, and that my cat converter on bank 2 was plugged. They wanted $2400 to replace it! I paid them $65 for ECU read and $70 for back pressure check. I put on new magnaflow cats on both bank one and two. The correct cats with the CO2 port.. Engine ran better.. However, after it's warmed up, I get bad idle. Very rough.

I talk to my BIL again. He said check the oil pressure and that it needs to be at 75psi at 2000rpm!!!! He said if it's under that at all, the engine is junk.. I buy a pressure gauge and hook it up at the oil pressure sensor port by the filter. Had wife run truck till warm and set at 2k rpm and gauge says 52psi.. But reading online guys say 40-60psi at 2k is where it should be????

While installing the guage and running the truck, I loosened the fitting on the back of the gauge to get all the air out of it, some oil dribbled out on floor. I noticed the oil was really dirty! I had 2k mile left on oil change but said f it. I changed oil that night. After oil change, the engine ran 8x better.. I even thought it was fixed! But I still get rough idle. It's not all the time though, which is weird.

So I take into parts store and read code. Says P0345... Bank 2 cam sensor. Both sensors are replaced. Still the same code shows and rough idle... I unplugged my bank 2 cam sensor and rough engine idle gone!

What is going on with this engine? Cam phasers? plugged oil passages? What happened to Bank 2 when that cat converter was plugged?

I would like to try and get this fixed. Otherwise I'm thinking about trading it in on a 2012 Ecoboost.. And ford can fix this 5.4 issue....

I feel for you man...right now I'm having the exact same issue. I've replaced the plugs and fuel filter, cleaned the TB and MAF sensor, inspected the FPDM, replaced the cats this past weekend with high-flows, ran sea-foam in gas tank a few times....and I'm STILL trying to chase down the rough idle.

I'm really leaning toward going ecoboost but, I'm getting married in Feb. so a new truck is out on possible solutions for the problem...til after the wedding.

I've read of a few people who've changed their oil to 5w40 full synthetic and the rough idle virtually disappeared.

But then I've read alot of posts claiming running that thick of an oil is a recipe for disaster....so I'm not really sure if I wanna risk trying it

I wouldnt chance it at all. Parts were probably just swapped over, never "cleaned". Take 10 or so minutes depending on how indepth you want to be.

Not being a smart a**, but what would cleaning the throttle body have anything to do with my Bank 2 code p0345 cam sensor?? Wouldn't both bank 1 and 2 be the issue since the throttle body runs both banks?

I'm guessing the dreaded cam phaser issue, timing chain, timing chain tensioner, timing chain guide, plugged oil passage to chain tensioner is the culpret....??

I have the same exact problem. What i did to verify it wasnt my VCT solenoids is I swapped them. I still got P0022 and P0345 when motor got to operating temp and only when coming to a stop. Ive replaced both CPS and all thats left is phasers and related hardware. Another culprit could be is the phaser jumped a tooth. But... Even if thats the case Im still gonna replace the phaser and related products. If you already have it all open you might as well. Keep us posted.
