2006 5.4 Oil change Recomendations
Hello All, and thanks for allowing me to the forum. I just bought a 2006 F150, with 5.4 triton motor with 109,000 miles. all is well so far. My question is: My mechanic said I should use 15w40 Rodella to change oil and use the original size type filter. Quick change places don't use the proper filter when doing the change, unless requested and maybe not then. . So, have any of you guy's/ gal's heard anything like this. Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

15-40 is ill-advised around here and for good reason. The clearances in the 3V is very small in some places and the 40 wt is just too thick. Most use it to mask problems. If you wanna run a slightly thicker oil, a lot run 5-30 as it is the standard oil for the 3V globally except in the US where it’s 5-20. Just make sure to use a decent oil filter and you’ll be fine. WIX, Motorcraft, and Mobil 1 to name a few. In the end, it’s your truck and do what you feel is right, but please for the love of god whatever you do, do not put that 15-40 in your motor.

Check out this thread... about 61% use 5w-20, 28% use 5w-30.

FL-820S is by far the most popular filter used here (cheap at Wal-mart, which is cheapest place to buy oil too).
My 2004 owners manual says to change it every 5,000 miles, which I adhere to.

Some folks consider 15w40 a bandaid for a failing timing system.
Day to day use, I wouldn't run it. I would campaign for the use of the Motorcraft filter. What oil you use is a pretty popular debate.
I personally have used 10w30 for most of the trucks life. Switched to 5w30 for a short time.
I think 5w20, 5w30 or 10w30 all will be fine.

I'm using Castrol 5W30 Full Synthetic. Walmart online has a good price on it and you can get a good deal on your Motorcraft filter too. Order two jugs of oil and a filter and the shipping is free.

NOTE: The picture of the oil bottle says 'Synthetic Blend' but that is incorrect.

The 15w40 Rotella is used by some to "cushion" cam phaser, lifter noise. Plus it has a high detergent content which people say will help with those noises too by keeping passages clear for oiling. I use 5w20 and run some sea foam or marvel mystery oil from time to time before changing to clean out any crud. I tried Royal Purple for a while because it has a high detergent content to keep things from plugging up, but I didn't notice much difference. I've been running conventional white bottle Valvoline for the last 30k miles and it works well. 82k miles when I bought it, 128k now and last oil change I used marvel mystery oil for a couple hundred miles before changing and I had to poke the crud out the drain hole so it would drain. Stick with 5w20 and flush here and there before changes. It's worked well for me on my 06 5.4 FFV.

I run 5w30 full syn no more than 5k or 4 months . This engine uses dirty engine oil to operate cam hydraulic circuit ,don't let it get dirty . It has a idiot light pressure gauge and a poor oil pump . A gentle clean with marvel mystery oil a good thing . No engine flush unless you are going to do a full timing job .
Cold climates have their oil turn to chocolate cake type sludge don't let it happen to you . Tensioner gasket failure starts a downward spiral then chains stretch and break guides dropping plastic into oil pu resulting in more low oil pressure . Only fix is steel tensioners with no gaskets ,timing job and new high volume oil pump 340hv .
