2005 5.4 Tick
Hey all. I recorded a video of a tick my truck started doing. I thought it was exhaust manifold and found a broken stud. I replaced the manifolds with JBA Shorty Headers and the tick noise is still there. In the video it sounds almost like a diesel but not really in person. The tick that started is much louder. The diesel sounds seem to be cam phasers, but like I said, it doesn't really sound that way in person. I unplugged each spark plug and injector one at a time and the sound never changed. It comes from the driver side of the engine, mostly from the bottom and the speed increases with with RPM until about 1,800 and then it can't be heard anymore. It tickes from the second you start it, until you turn it off. Hot or cold doesn't matter. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Since you have the 05, I would start with changing out the VCT Solenoids. This swap takes about 5 minutes, lucky you. I had to take my valve covers off. 6 hour job later.
Here is a decent video on how to do this. Lots of people have had success with the tick going away by changing these out.

I went out and unplugged the VCT solenoids one side at a time while idling and there was zero change in anything. ?? It wasn't warmed up but the tick happens when cold as well, sounds exactly the same no matter if cold or hot.
Can you get a mechanic stethoscope and probe to see where the tick is coming from? The fuel injectors are noisy on these engines and do produce a tick sound normally. My earbuds kinda suck but could it be lash adjuster (lifter) noise, I found 13 bad out of my 24 when I did my phaser/timing component change. A stethoscope will really help to pinpoint the noise.
