Default 2004 5.4 no overdrive

OK guys. Today while going down the interstate I went to pass an 18 wheeler. I felt a jerk then my overdrive went out. I am able to turn my od off and everything works fine. After I did some research I believe the snap ring that holds the overdrive piston has broken and pieces have fallen into the valve body. My question is has anyone here ever attempted this repair? I know I have to pull the valve body and such. If anyone has done this can you advise how hard it was to do? Or if you took it in to the shop, how much did it cost to fix? Thanks in advance!

never attempted but a shop is probally just going to say you need a complete overhaul tranny shops are the biggest rip offs ever, if i were you i would have a used low mileage one swapped in probally cheapest route. tranny shop would 99% of the time screw you over...

Take a looksie! If your cant figure it out maybe a used trans is your best bet. Are you able to remove the tranny if need be?

Well I went ahead and bought all the parts needed for the job. The more I read in other forums and talked to a trusted Ford mechanic, the more I'm leaning towards the snap ring busting. I'm not getting the engine brake in 2 gear but am still able to drive with the OD off. I got a snap ring, valve body gaskets, tranny filter, tranny pan gasket(third time to drop pan) and went ahead and got the OD servo... I'm betting this will fix the problem.

Will do. Just scared crap less about dropping the valve body. I've done diesels but not a gas burner. From the videos I've referred to, its just a matter of remembering where the bolts go... I'm actually thinking about letting a buddy do it tomorrow because I'm on shift for 24 hours and have to be out of the chute within 5 min. But if he does it, I'll have him take pics. There was a problem with the 70 series trannies doing this and the 75 series is basically the same setup..

Attempt the repair. From what I've read in other posts it's a fairly common ailment and probably not too difficult a job as I have read its about $250 to $300 at a tranny shop so you should be able to pull it off. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
