15w40 in the 5.4l, no more ticking?!

Yes
The ticking noise is timing issue caused by low oil pressure in the phasers and ruining them internally. Main cause is losing pressure from tensioner seal. It's a tight engine yes. Well when it's new. After 100k there is a lot of gap in cam bearing and phasers. You can't put 15 40 just like that. But can't do 5 20 either.
First cure the noise issue. But for cam bearings either upgrade the oil pump or use a portion of thicker oil. Otherwise you will be looking at losing the heads too.

Think pure synthetic 5W40 that meets OEM specs closest is a good choice for motors above 85,000 miles. All have heard the rattles of 5W20 cold startups. I have always put in 5W30 after the initial 1st oil change with the +10,000 miles on The motor.

Renaissance Honky
Rattles on start-up are from chain tensioners with blown seals. Oil won't fix that, but priming with a few seconds of flood-start will.
Tapping noises that don't go away are Lash adjusters or lifters. Oil likely won't fix that.
Heavier-weight motor oils can stabilize a VCT system until you can get in to repair it.
- I know this, I've done it personally. Mine used to freak out on 5w-20 when hot, didn't do it on 10w-30, but was right on the verge. 5w-40 stopped it completely.
- Bad tensioner seal design, and bad VCT Solenoid design is what takes these engines down. Couple that with the lack of 'safety margin' of the CAFE demanded 20w oils, and there ya go.
Man, this is an old thread.

The real problem with the oils are the additives. Reason to keep the oil in the motor fresh with the besy full synthetic oil package. The pour package the above thread notes is mostly caused by poor additive breakdown with miles on the oil change. It only took the guy a few times running with the additive package screwed to put the kabosh to a great motor. The best Full synthetic is the best longevity bet drained slightly early not way after oil change is due. Forget synthetic mix oils is mho use only the best full synthetic. Most living below the mason dixon line don't see 0 degree start ups very often.

ive read on another forum about switching oils to 15w 40..... they say the ticking goes away, but ive read conflicting opinions about that oil being to thick, but i also read that 15w40 oil has come a long way and shouldn't harm anything, guys have been using for 100k or more miles... opinions or anyone done this oil switch?
