Update
I just heard from the shop. I was expecting only an update onowhat they they found but surprised me by telling me it was done already. They say it was the FPDM. I'm relieved that it wasn't something catastrophic, but also irked that it was something I could have easily fixed myself for significantly less than $489.

I would count my blessings at $500
It could have been a lot worse ,this is unusual, must have over pressurized fuel rail . It normally just loses fuel pressure goes intermittent and won't run or start . . I wonder what torque pro would have reported for fuel pressure .good you let us know . Its helps the library .Mine drove me nuts for a couple of days .

Thanks for following up.
Despite the rubber stand-offs, there is still electrolysis in action, so inspect it once a year (when you drop the spare to inspect it and air it up... you do that once a year, right????) and check it out. I'm on my 3rd in 150k miles.

As far as inspecting the spare tire and module, I just bought this truck last Fall for a spare/towing vehicle. I've only put 600 miles on it. About all I've done is check the oil. Think I'll be replacing the spark plugs soon though!

Bumping this back up because I'm right back to where I started, even with the new FPDM. Barely made it home today. Truck died just as I pulled into the driveway after puffing black smoke all three way there.
Got a CEL this time, code P0191. Sounds like I have a leaking exhaust manifold too, but I think that's unrelated. Just another thing to fix. Sigh.
Guessing I should start by replacing the fuel rail pressure sensor?

We just had a guy whose fuel rail sensor was causing fuel out the tail pipe . It seems the diaphragm inside ruptured and was putting fuel in the vacuum line to the intake flooding it with fuel . .He said the aftermarket was no good and he bought a ford oem for $110 and it fixed problem . Could be your over pressurized fuel rail ruptured the same . You could cap off line and port on same and see if it improves .
Plus another test for dripping injectors is to pull fuel rails with injectors on them put newspaper under and key on none should drip . Leaking injectors are engine killers. Reinsert injectors with motor oil on orings . Injectors should be replaced in sets of 4 /per bank . Don't like remans ..

Thanks for the advice. I might have to try that drip test.
I have another update:
Apparently there was a miscommunication from the shop when I picked up the truck. They did not replace the FPDM. They replaced the fuel rail pressure sensor, (part #FPS507) which is what is now giving me the P0191 code. I'm also getting code P0452, which I know is related.
I checked out the FPDM just because, and it actually looks pretty new. It's installed with standoffs and there's no visible damage on either side. I'm pretty sure the previous owner had it replaced not too long ago.
So now I'm left wondering if the fuel rail pressure sensor they installed is defective, or if something else is causing it to fail.

I think I figured out why I was getting a P0452 code. A check valve in the vacuum line at the evaporative emission solenoid was completely shot. It was clogged with dirt and after I blew the dirt out, the valve was allowing air to pass both ways.
I'm hoping this is also the source of my pressure sensor problem.
