XLT vs Lariat

I bought in 2011 and went with the XLT, here is why.
I love the XLT chrome package grill and hate the lariat grill.
I didnt want leather seats.
I found an XLT with backup camera, sliding rear window, bucket seats, and a full center console.
I couldnt find a lariat with a 6.5' bed in my long search.
I got the off road package, which I do not believe is available in the lariat. (Could be wrong)
Basically I could get all the features I wanted from lariat in a loaded XLT without the "old man fee" of a lariat. After all said and done I could have gotten a lariat for about the same price with a few less features. The XLT fit my needs better. I am not bashing the lariat, simply stating why I made my decision.

As someone has already stated, no that's not a change for 2013. Been that way for awhile. I was actually planning on buying a Lariat with a bench seat in 2010 until I discovered I hated Ford's version of a bench seat (had been used to the Dodge bench seat style). A close dealership even had one in stock that met my exact specifications as well. Very happy with my decision to go with the captain's chairs and flow-thru console

I went XLT for several reasons:
Cheaper, with left over money for possible mods or other hobbies
Cloth seats, I have a dog that rides with me a lot and I didn't want the leather scratched/punctured. I know there are ways around this with leather, but cloth is easy
Fixed center console was a $300 option and well worth it
Flow through console didn't mean anything to me. XLT has vents under the seats anyways
Backup camera can be added by anyone for cheap ($50ish if you do it yourself)
You can't really go wrong either way.

I have an xlt and like it. I don't care for back up cameras and the like. My head automatically swivels when I back up, so I'm good. A floor shifter in a truck is a wasted seat, in my opinion. That being said, if I wanted any of that, or two tone paint or a different wheel style, etc, I think I'd buy the truck that already had everything on it that I wanted. I just wish my xlt had that old man feel.

I was in the exact same predicament when I ordered mine last month. Speced out a XLT intending to go with that. By the time I added all the options I wanted, Lariat was only a bit more. Plus I gained other options I didn't anticipate. I actually really like the wood accents, but things like that are highly subjective it depends on what you like. Doesn't make it right or wrong.
Ended up going with the 401 and added the Sony and console.
I'm sure I would have really liked the XLT. But I'm pretty sure I'm going to love my Lariat. Now just can't wait for delivery!

So many good points made, thanks everyone. Sorry for the scrambled condition of my original post, I had several interruptions, air card disconnections, occupational distractions and spell checker got in the way too.
I hate regrets so I'm trying to avoid that on this purchase. I bought a new 2000 Dakota extended cab and in one year regretted NOT paying another $1400 for cub cab. So I might regret not getting the Lariat, or I might regret spending an extra $5,000 because I could have just got the XLT……..I’m doomed either way. Back to the facts.
bobkyle2….thanks for the clean sweep of the thread, sorry that happened. I cleaned up original post a little too
FX4/King alternatives………I do like the FX4, kind of a sport Lariat but just not my preferred style. I see the basic King is priced quite a bit more than a low end Lariat.
Rear view camera…….. can get it in XLT or Lariat. That’s got to be very handy with such a large truck, just wish it was on the bumper so it could be used when the tailgate is down.
Heat/cool seats,……….. If I ever did try it, I’d probably never go back. The seats and the whole vehicle gets very hot here in Florida , cloth would breath better absent the cool seat. That alone is not worth 5K to me anyway, that’s another 7 years of a deer hunting lease. But (pun intended) that’s a good point.
Mkoeh475 said "xlt has vents under the seats" nice, I gott’a check on that.
Power seats…..one on XLT, two are available on the Lariat. Nice, but not persuasive either way.
Quality leather……after 100k miles…..I think it wont’ matter unless there covered. We put after marked full leather in my wife’s car, high quality and a wide choice of shades. Plus we still have the new unused cloth seat covering.
Power folding mirrors…………great invention…………...no bad invention. I would not know when I’m too close to a tree. (lol)
column shifter …….. a definite plus. Its out of the way and allows an open floor ahead of the spacious ridged console. I don’t need the center seat and the smaller arm rest gives the whole area more room for driver and passenger. The full console with floor shifter looks very sharp, yes, I just don’t see it as functional other than to get cool air to the front seats and better flow to the rear.
And to comment again on the split seat, that’s a huge arm rest and small storage area. I would not ride across the dealers lot on that skinny center seat. That must be only for a small child.
Nagging question, On the XLT, why would the lesser involved console cost $300 more than a multi functional split seat. And then they call it "BUCKET SEATS". The driver and passenger seats are the same seats??? Only difference is the console. Ford ‘blue’ that one.
Cegan1825…….I think you hit on what I was feeling, tampering with the already excellent XLT to imitate a Lariat. Like vehicular incest or something.
Trade value………… I dont know for a fact but in 5-10 years, may not be 1K difference between the two.
Now if/when the 2015 Global Ranger comes out with the EB 3.5 or 5.0 Coyote, then the Lariat may be a good, close to- even trade at that time. Other wise, when I trade my trucks, they ain’t much left. Got 292,097 miles on my 2000 Dakota today, not babied either.

Wood grain interior trim……………initially looks classic, but not after a closer look, just as soon spray paint it. If its that light shade, I guarantee I’d paint it.
Thanks for the contributions everyone. I think it’s a very personalized decision. How will I feel about the decision five, eight, ten years down the road.
What looks better a raged out XLT or a raged out Lariat?

I have an XLT. I wanted the FX4 but could not afford it at that time. I leased my truck for three years and have just under two to go. I do have a loaded up XLT. It has the optional bucket seats. The console has a large amount of storage although it is not the flow through console, it is still very nice. I like how the arm rest is very low. I felt trapped in the XLT without the bucket seats. The arm rest was too large for me. I'm not short by any means. I'm 6ft tall. I do love my truck. But I will get the FX4 when my lease is up. I do have the off road package too. So the only difference from an XLT and the FX4 is the interior and chrome everything. If you like chrome then the XLT or the lariat will work for you. Just mostly upgraded interior. I know your choice was between XLT and the lariat. This is just my input. Hope it helps.
