Rental car coverage is optional. If you have it, it will be listed on the front page of your policy and usually has either a per day max (ex: $25/day) or a total rental max (ex: $500). Sometimes both, or could be actual expense incurred with no limit (rare). We can guess, but your policy will give specifics.

Most carriers have a discount contract with a rental car company and require you to use that company. If you rent a car on your own and end up not picking their vendor, you may have to return the car you rented and get a different one from the approved company. Stick with a larger national company like Enterprise and you should be fine.

While that is true for collision and comprehensive (your Fault) it does not matter in a liability claim (Their Fault). Liability will cover rental for the claimant (You) even if the Insured (Them) does not have the coverage.

In this case, Jerry44's wife was not at fault as the other party ran the stop sign. So Jerry44 and his wife are Claimants on the other party's policy and are entitled to a rental up to and including a full size truck regardless of the other party's personal coverage.

We're in a similar situation at the moment... guy made an illegal left fight in front of our truck...100% his fault... everyone is fine, but our 2010 Lariat, with less than 18k miles is boogered up on the front end. Happened last Sunday night, and the other guys own insurance company hasn't even been able to get him to respond to their calls! So now, we either have to wait 30 days, or go through our own insurance to get repairs done sooner... it sucks!

BUT... what I really wanted to make you aware of, is "Diminished Value". Be sure and make a claim for the difference in the value of your unwrecked truck, and a repaired one. No matter how good the repair is, the trade-in, or sale value will be less... and you're entitled to claim the difference.

Right, but then he is at the mercy of the other carrier and you hope it isn't someone like "The General"

If you have good coverage, go through your own carrier and let them subrogate against the responsible party. Much less hassle and things should be done right.

Agree with this. As indicated above, you ARE entitled to a rental from the responsible party's insurance company. In this case - since you have the same company, that could be a negative, as the other driver's co (your co.) will try to save every $$ they can. If you had different company's, your co would probably go to bat for you and then recover from the other company.

You've got a tight timeline - I would try to find the rental you want, but not do the deal today, and then be on the phone with your agent the first thing Monday morning. If you have a cell for your agent, call it today - be proactive, and don't settle for a chevy loaner

As for settling with the insurance company - states that allow a credit against sales tax for your trade-in, will also allow a credit for the insurance settlement on a totaled vehicle.

WOW..................Both trucks in this thread will never drive right again, I hope the OP's is a complete lose so he can start over, again I don't think either truck will drive right.......Going forward both will have this on the carfax thing showing the trucks were in accidents.

My wifes Honda Pilot got hit within the first two years we owned it and it still doesn't drive right, seems like we have to replace front tie rods ever couple of years, sad for both you guys!!!!!

With me being out in AZ...we have, well....undocumented illegals-Driving! And ....of course the gal that hit me was hispanic, and had an expired insurance card, but told police her updated card was at home :explicit:....seriously - come on?! After receiving a copy of the accident report I called the insurance carrier she wrote down. State Farm! (I know that's a good carrier - hopefully ) She had not called to report the accident (big suprise). So I wait until Monday.
I realize it's just a truck and that no one got hurt, but....you work hard; you pay your taxes, (I have a business-pay a lot of them!) you learn to appreciate and take pride in ownership of a new vehicle. I can tell that their is some serious damage to the drivetrain. 10 years ago to almost the day I had a red light runner from Cali hit my Silverado....and absolutely blasted that truck. The F150 really stood it's ground and kept me safe. As much as I want My truck back, I also don't want any issues going forward.
:fingerscrossed:
