They just looked at the left side to see if it's at or above the AS1 line.

In Texas they check the tint at the yearly State Inspection. My strip across the windshield draws their attention and they check it. If its above the AS1 you're good here.

i'm in CA and our tint laws are pretty restictive about tint on the front windows and windshield. I cant speak for other LEO's, but i would never cite someone if their strip across the front of the windshield was 1/4" or 1/2" too long. motor/traffic units may measure the strip, but you would be hard pressed to find a patrol officer to do that. as long as the strip isnt 8" or something way over legal, you will probably be ok. if your entire front windshield is tinted or if I cant see you through the side windows, its obviously too dark and I will cite you every day of the week. I go by the spirit of the law and officer safety on window tint. If i dont know what you are doing because of your illegal tint, you get cited. If it is so dark that you cant see the school kids crossing the road in the evening, you get cited.

I noticed other people were talking about annual inspections. We do not have those on passenger vehicles in california, so i cannot comment on that.

I think they should check to see if the strip is above the line at the center of the windshield. Thanks for the response!

I had an F250 with 20% on the front two windows then 5% over the rest and never got bothered. I was at a buddy's shop one day out 29 North and was talking to a guy who asked me about my tint. He seemed real interested in the front windows......... I later found out he was the Charlottesville PD Captain off duty. But still never had an issue.

Thanks, do you prefer when people with dark tinted windows to put then down when you pull them over? Or do you fell like they are trying to hide their tint?

In my experience I have always put them down just to show I have nothing to hide.

The cops where I live have the windows tinted, at our expense, at a local shop that uses such dark tint material you can not see if they are in the car of not, but then they are professionals! It is WAY darker than anything we are allowed to have!

I was behind one of them last week and watched him run his car into a curb, destroying two wheels and tires, while using his laptop! The cop hopped out of the vehicle and was raging mad! If it had not been for all the people around, he would have likely pulled his weapon and shot the curb multiple times!

Extra paperwork will make most LEOs cranky.

If I am stopping someone for tinted windows, I have already seen it by the time they roll it down. I like to believe that most people are being curtious and trying to put my at ease by allowing me to see them in the vehicle. Same thing for people who turn on the interior dome lamp at night. However, there are some people that try to hide it and say they were driving with them down and there is no way that I could have seen it. I generally go the extra mile for those people.

As a general rule, shut it down and roll the windows down before the officer gets out of his car. If it is night, an interior dome lamp should be turned on. Not too much fiddling around before they get to the window.
