Maybe. While the onus would be on Ford to prove that the warranty claim was caused by the chip, is that something you want to risk?

Ive had one for a year and there is definitely a difference from the stock tune to the "performance tune." I cant vouge for extra hp or tq or anything like that, but throttle response and shifting is definitely worth it.

Not to get the thread off track, but is a 'performance chip' the same as a custom tune, or having your truck put on a dyno and have it tuned by certified professionals?

I may be misinformed but I thought that a professionally done tune was different than one of these chip devices. Because I have seen day and night dyno sheet runs of vehicles (my own included) that she that these tunes (done professionally at a shop) improve performance.

I haven't experienced the chip version of this so I don't know if it is suppossed to be the same...?

If this chip tune is like a canned tune, these tend to change things like shift points, transmission line pressure, abuse modes, things like that. When compared to a custom tune, it's a night and day thing. I do custom tunes on GMs. And I have found that every engine is different. When you balance your AFR, timing, MF curve, PE tables, etc your engine will run better and give you better performance and mileage. From the factory the PCM is flashed to a average tune, but that may not be the best tune for your engine.

I've been following with great interest these 'chip' threads, as I am sick of the 96 mph governor on my new truck.
My experience in the import world is that one must have full "stand alone" ECMs to have the greatest tuning potential and maximum performance gains. Units from HALTECH, PFS, POWER FC, etc give one near unlimited options whilst dyno tuning.
However, my experience has also been on vehicles that are 10 - 20 years old, where the warranty is a LONG gone issue. Considering that the factory warranties on the drivetrain on new cars/trucks is pretty long term and taken out to 7 years/100,000 miles with optional coverage like I bought, there is no way I am willing to risk having a warranty claim denied on my new truck due to 'chipping' it.
As others have pointed out....the dealers can and WILL play a long....long.....LONG waiting game with you, one that few of us can ever win.

where do you find it appropriate to be near, much less exceeding, 96 mph?

Thanks,

This can be worrisome, best for your peace-of-mind to stop in and chat with your service manager. You may find he has a reasonable approach to servicing customized trucks... they're not in business to chase their customers away.

I find it appropriate all the time, when pulling out to pass the two idiots doing 52 and 52.3 mph next to each other.

I know that GM's can be custom tuned, the best being Wheatley and Blackbear, but what about Ford's? Can they be custom tuned as well? All I ever hear about for Fords are performance chips and from what I know of performance chips(at least for GM's)...they are garbage and not worth the money.
