I have yet to take my truck off road, threw mud, gravel roads or anything like that yet. However I seem to have rock chips on my front end from light (10miles to work) highway driving? My 1999 Yukon doesn't have rock chips like that and it's got 182k on it. Maybe it's because this is my first newer car, so I am noticing everything. I sure hope so, but I swear if I hit a moth driving when I clean the remains off I'm sure paint will be missing. What gives? The paint is so thin anything and everything chips it? It's driving me insane!!

 

I'm sure its the same thickness of your Yukons paint. Your just noticing it because its new and your being picky.

 

I'll be getting a 3m vinyl wrap for my front bumper and mirror caps soon. It's about 400$ but no more chips!

 

probably right, I wash it every other week and today we had some sun so after work I cleaned it up and noticed 5 new chips on the hood 😟.. It is what it is, throw some touch up on it and move on. Just wondering if anyone else felt the paint chipped easily?

 

I hear yah in that lol, but my hood is fine as I have a hood deflector, but I do have the panted bumpers and yes they do chip but I keep a touch a pen in my glove box and touch up when i notice chipping!! There is 3M kits for 200 on Amazon for the DIYer which I'll be picking up soon and it comes with hood,bumpers,grille,mirror,fenders,tailgate,head and tail lights film!!

 

There are a lot of factors with chips. A big one has been mentioned before, it's new and you're probably noticing them more. I have heard this from numerous repeat customers, who then bought a new vehicle. "Well my last vehicle didn't chip like this... " And me, the guy who had repaired that person's previous vehicle can assure you, it had just as many, and chipped just the same.


The paint on your truck is no thinner than your Yukon. Also, a lot is luck. My current 2010 only has about 7 chips on the front end with 60k miles on it. And that includes the painted chrome grille I have. So not many. And I drive 50 miles highway everyday at 70mph. 7 chips is no where near as many as the 02 s-10 I had, that I bought new, when it got to the same mileage. At 60k it looked like it took 3 or 4 shotgun blasts. And back then I barely drove any highway, mostly back roads.


Always remember as well, paint is one of the first areas of cost cutting in factories. Notice how there is no clear coat in engine bays anymore? When I started painting 15 years ago, most vehicles had clear there. A rock chip usually starts with the adhesion of the sealer, or lack thereof. And manufacturers bid out their sealer to the lowest bidder. A paint job is only as good as what's under it. And if there's cheap *** sealer under it, well...

 

If it bugs you, have them professionally repaired and then have a invisible bra installed.

 

I'll get over it, it's a truck after all! I know it's just the first of many to come.. I can't expect it to stay perfect forever.
