what should I do?
I just bought a 2012 xlt with the 5.0. I am wanting to put exhaust on it. Was thinking about just removing the muffler and running 2 pipes out the back. Just wondering if that will hurt the truck any, like kill fuel mileage or power? If I do that I'll leave the cats and resonator in place.
It won't harm anything. No change in fuel mileage (unless your right foot gets heavier listening to the increased sound), no change in power, and no check engine lights. Only thing is that with a muffler delete, it will sound pretty raspy and poppy.
With even leaving the resonator on it'll still sound bad? I'm just curious I haven't been around any that had exhaust on it. What would be a good muffler or setup to do? Would like to have dual pipes out the back under the bumper.

Borla, Magnaflow, MBRP, and Flowmaster are all popular choices that guys use for muffler swaps. They all have universal sizes with both single out or dual out options. Start looking at videos on youtube of muffler swaps to find a sound you like.
My recommend, sit on YouTube and listen to as many exhaust videos as you can of the ford 5.0. You'll eventually land on something. Take your time too, you're going to hear this exhaust almost everyday, pick one you'll be able to tolerate.
If resale value of your truck is a priority, consider a bolton catback system. YOU may love your hacked apart loud exhaust system but when it comes time to sell it you're definitely cutting down your list of prospective buyers considerably by having that loud as heck, "custom" exhaust.
Just my two cents, your truck, do what you want.
Catbacks are great. I love my borla. But if you are looking for inexpensive, then a flowmaster 40 or 50 series, dynomax, or magnaflow muffler can be had pretty cheap. Then just give it to the muffler shop to put on. Leave the resonator for a little less tone and no drone or take it off for louder sound and if you dont mind highway drone.
