Default What?? A MPG question?

Hello all,

I do not want to start a "Tuner war", But I have a question. Trucks specs below: I read on here about the mpg's some of you are getting....I am notting getting anything close to that...Do different tuners make that much different(I have VMP)I really don't count the in town driving that much(14.5mpg)I have took two highway trips. The first trip was an empty truck, most all highway and Interstate 10. I tried Performance(16.5mpg) and Econo(16.1) all at posted speeds. I just got back from a trip pulling my 16ft enclosed trailer(v-nose) with a Polaris Ranger and camp gear inside. With Performance tune I got 8.4mpgs with little wind. On the way home I had a 25/30mph head wind, Tow tune 7.1mpgs. Is there a possibilty Justin sent the wrong tunes? Is this even close to normal? Any help would be great.I also were hand checked.

How heavy or tall is trailer? and you have stock tires? I doubt they sent the wrong tunes you just must have a lead foot on accelerating

I don't think they are far off. I get 14.5 mpg stock around town with my 5.4l and if I'm driving the " posted" speed 70mph I get 16-18 mpg depending on the terrain, wind and a million other things. With a tune your probably not going to get any better. Any vehicle I have ever put a programmer on, I had a hard time keeping my foot out of it. Therefore, causing me get the same or usually worse mpg.

I have a 6.2 stock motor at the time and 2 inch lift and 34's and I averaged 8 mpg doing 58 mph pulling a 34ft travel trailer.

U have a 5 star Tune but not done any pulling yet.

Using cruise control can lower your mileage if it works hard to maintain a speed.

Empty I get about 10mpg around town.

Meh, I get 12.3 around town with my stock motor (5.4L) and about 16-18 on the highway. I have A/T tires which dropped it some but I have a vicious lead foot at times. My 5 Star tune that is on the way probably wont make much difference since me likee da vroom vroom...

I don't know, but I did a test last night. On my 87 Performance Tune:

75 MPH - 15 mpg
70 MPH - 16 mpg
65 MPH - 18 mpg

Each speed was with cruise control over about 20 miles.

This sounds low.
I have an '04 Lariat Screw, 5.4, 4sp tranny, 3.73gears, stock tires and no tuner.
I get 12-13 around town. And 15-17 on the freeway. Last time I towed on the hwy (toyota compact on a car dolly) I got just under 10mpg.

This was moderate driving. I usually drive 5-10 over the speed limit when not towing and at posted speed or slightly less when towing.

With a 6sp and 3.55's, you should be getting better mileage than me.

I rented a 2010 Screw last year XLT 5.4 probably 3.55 but I am not sure. I drove it about 400 miles round trip to pick up some antique furniture. Avg mileage was 18.1mpg trip was all hwy averaging about 60mph. Payload was all in the bed and weighed about 900lbs. Terrain was hilly.

I have read one person that put in a drop in K&N filter on their 09/10 F150 lost 1 to 2 miles to the gallon, and gained it back when they removed it. I have also read the same about a tuner from VMP. Lost mileage with tuner gained when removed. Single case reported also. Not saying those are your problem, just some suggestions to try.

K&N filter or CAI? Canned tune or custom?

If it's a CAI, then you need a custom tune to go with it. According to folks around here, canned tunes do not work well with a CAI. Sometimes they even set of a trouble code, usually "lean condition".
