I thought about doing that, but instead wasted $26 on a 4WD switch and just mounted it where the coin holder is. It doesn't do anything but look cool and light up when I turn the dash lights on.

But here's a question - could you use the existing 4WD harness, which is attached to the coin holder, to provide whatever wiring you needed to operate the voltmeter? OK, the instrument light circuit will work, but is there any one of the other circuits that will actually operate the voltmeter? Or will you have to run other wires, and how hard is that?

I can't tell from the 4WD switch wiring diagram.

You sure could. Only need the hot and ground lead off the harness. There might be some voltage drop from that point to the battery, but not much and would make things super simple.
