Default Give Brands Bad Name

Look, I have owned 16 Ford trucks and SUV's, most F250 / F350, several diesels, several gas, Bronco, Excursion, vans, cars, etc.

I currently own the F150 ecoboost

All of the name calling, (troll) and fussing is not productive.

The point in posting is not to damage Ford's reputation but to find others who are having the same issues and to get Ford to pay attention.

It is easy to name call etc. when this has not happened to you. But when you have purchased a $50,000+ vehicle, are still making very high monthly payments on it, depend on the vehicle for work and to make a living, and have had the crap scared out of you driving it when the vehicle took over and did something that no vehicle in my very long history of driving a lot of miles and towing a lot of trailers etc. and Ford won't listen to a loyal customer then you get a bit fed up.

Nothing I said is untrue. Ask my employee who was with me how scary it is to be going down the road at 40 MPH and have the back tires lock up. I am not talking about a downshift and RPM run up, I am talking about tires locking for several seconds.

In my case the truck threw ABS codes along with transmission codes.

I was fortunate it was not raining, it happened on a straight road, I wasn't going 70 MPH, and there wasn't someone riding my tail - all things that could easily have been the case when the truck decided to do whatever it did that caused brand-new michelin tires on dry pavement to squall and lay rubber down on the pavement.

I have never sued anyone or been in a lawsuit but when your truck has been in the shop repeatedly for multiple issues with c. converter, turbo, transmission, ABS, etc. and the most often response is (technician could not duplicate) - which is expected because this is intermittent and you can drive 500 miles with no issues at all then all of a sudden the truck decides to go crazy, can't decide what gear to be in, gets stuck in one gear and won't shift until you turn the engine off, goes into limp mode, won't accelerate, etc. and Ford won't help even after opening a case # you kind of need help.

Ford needs to listen to their loyal customers, people who use their trucks for work. They say "Ford Owns Work" and they do but it doesn't mean they don't have problems - especially with first year vehicles with new engines, transmissions, etc. like my 2011 Ecoboost.

We can help them troubleshoot and find issues that did not occur on initial testing. They don't need to dismiss us out of hand because a technician cannot duplicate the issue driving the truck around the block for 5 minutes.

The standard practice is if it can't be duplicated the dealer can't order parts, work on it, etc. On my truck it had several symptoms, not shifting out of first sometimes, stalling with no acceleration sometimes, downshifting, locking rear tires, surging after letting off gas with an increase in both RPM and speed for a couple of seconds, rough idle, transmission slipping and you have to shut truck off and restart to get it to actually pull the weight of the truck, etc.

All are intermittent and the truck itself decides when to act up. I have had times it has gone a week without doing anything. I have had times I have three or 4 issues on my 4 mile commute to the office. It is rare that the truck with throw a code that results in a wrench light and something Ford can actually respond in their system.

But when a customer who has owned more than 20 Ford vehicles, who has driven over 25,000 miles a year for 25 plus years, who has operated all kinds of equipment from dozers to backhoes to tractors to diesel motor coaches to cars to many 4x4 trucks and pulled trailers of all kinds has issues with a new product and it has been maintained properly they should pay attention.

The sad fact is that they don't. I have a truck that I cannot sell to someone else in good conscience until it is fixed, I cannot depend on it in my work because it is always in the shop, it is dangerous, etc.

Thanks to posts in forums like this I found a lead for a possible cause - wiring harness chafing due to rough spot on transmission casting. Dealer just replaced that this week. They are also replacing the driver side turbocharger.

Maybe that will fix the issues. Maybe not. But even if it does I have a truck that has had the transmission clutches replaced at 40,000 miles because the truck itself is doing something wrong and eating them up by shifting at crazy points, slipping, etc. It has had all kinds of things replaced that I have never had replaced in any other engine. This truck has been worked on more in 50,000 miles than all other vehicles I have owned combined and most I drive until they have 150,000 miles or more.

Default Protecting Brand

You are not "protecting" the brand by keeping quiet. You are helping the brand when you force them to deal with problems that exist in at least some of their vehicles which results in improved engineering and reliability.

What I at first was just to have the truck fixed. But after more than 10,000 miles of serious abuse to the drivetrain due to unresolved issues that could not be duplicated I simply wanted Ford to take my truck back for a fair price considering miles driven so I don't have to take a bath on trade-in, then to take it to Michigan and tear it down and study it to see what the issues are.

There probably are not many ecoboost trucks out there with 50,000 miles in less than 2 years that have pulled trailers 50% of the time, some up to 10,000 lbs. Mine is rated for 11,200 lbs towing so all within specification but I have certainly worked this one more than most who just pull a boat to the lake a few weekends or don't pull at all.

But you guys need to understand that just because you have not had these problems it does not mean they do not exist. When we are talking about computer control of everything (fly by wire) including when the transmission shifts up or down, goes into park or reverse, torque converter locks up or not, the fuel mixture, the throttle input, spark advance, etc. and if the programming is not right or the sensors are not sending proper information or in the case of a twin turbo unit if the boost is different on one side of the engine than the other creating an imbalance and different exhaust gas temps etc. the truck can do odd things that you have no control over and is not controlled by your driving habits etc.

These trucks "learn" and try to maximize fuel economy for each driver depending on whether they drive easy or are heavy footed. So how does towing a heavy trailer or light trailer for a high percentage of the miles driven factor into how the truck behaves when empty? What happens when sensors provide faulty data or there is an issue as with wire chafing which short-circuits the data and prevents correct information from being delivered from the computer to the engine or transmission or from sensors back to computer?

At any rate, some of you are very quick to call BS when you are the ones who have no clue what you are talking about and you are doing so on the basis that you have not had these experiences yourself.

I am a loyal Ford fan. Harming the reputation of their products and in particular the F150 Ecoboost actually harms me because I own one and eventually need to sell it. But when Ford won't listen you kind of don't have a choice. I tried to find the contact for the F150 lead engineer (Eric Kuehn at time of launch and now he is over electric vehicle development), I opened a case, I spoke to my dealer repeatedly, etc.

My wife won't drive my truck. She is afraid she will get ran over when it stalls and won't go, she is afraid she will wreck when it downshifts or locks up rear tires. I don't like driving it but don't have a choice until the issues are resolved because until the problem can be duplicated by a Ford technician they can't work on it.

My warranty is about to expire and then all of these costs will be on me so when you are told to just keep driving it until something breaks so they can fix it then that is not a good fix. I drive all over the country and I am supposed to get out somewhere and have a breakdown that leaves me without a vehicle and hundreds or thousands of miles from home? Then if something does not break before warranty expires I am hung with it?

Hopefully the repairs this last week and the turbo they have ordered will resolve the issues. Never would have found that if it had not been for forums where others were describing issues and posting what resolved it in their case.

So don't flame people for posting their problems when they are trying to get help, resolve problems, etc. We are a valuable resource to Ford and could help them resolve their issues.

All I want or ever wanted was for Ford to do the right thing, to treat me with respect and listen to me, to at least consider that what I am saying is true and what I am experiencing is actually happening.

If I was the kind of person who was always complaining or looking for problems that don't exist, if I did not understand engines and machines, if I did not have the experience I do and the years of buying multiple vehicles from Ford then maybe I could understand it. But why all of a sudden with this one truck am I throwing a fit? Because in this particular case the truck is a lemon. It isn't dependable. It isn't safe. If the issues go unresolved it is likely that it will eventually cause a wreck.

On a final point, it isn't even just the way the truck runs and performs. Look at your receiver hitch. Ecoboost trucks are rated by the manufacture to pull up to 11,300 lbs depending on how equipped. Look at how that hitch is made. The receiver is welded BELOW the cross bar, not through it. Now go look at a Super Duty with similar tow ratings. Notice any difference?

In my particular case the welds cracked on the receiver hitch. After an argument Ford replaced the hitch. I have the exact trailer (A Jayco Octane 26Y) which is within the specifications for the truck in both total weight and tongue weight. I was using a Reese load leveling hitch with anti-sway feature. The heavy-duty one not the light one. The replacement hitch that Ford put on is rated at 12,500 lbs which is 700 pounds below the towing rating of my particular truck. The tongue weight is below the weight rating too. I sold the Octane and no longer pull it but if I did I would be pulling more weight with more tongue weight than the hitch but within the rating of the truck.

It is things like this that Ford needs to pay attention to. That hitch they put on the F150 is not heavy enough to pull 11,000 plus pounds. It will eventually fail and when it does it will likely cause an accident. If they are going to rate the trucks that high they need to build a hitch like they do for the Super Duty that is welded through the cross tube which means there are welds on all 4 sides and both ends as well as reinforcement plates on top and bottom.
