So we have two gas drinking daily drivers. haha. But we actually decided to get rid of the 4runner and buy her a little lexus IS250 to drive. They get close to 30 mpg on the highway. So I'm not very worried about our gas bill anymore. I still may look into a tuner to help out on the highway. I probably drive on the highway 75% of the time.
I traded a '04 4runner SE for my truck. I got 14-16 mpg but I also had +1" tires (32") and a 2.5" lift. Great truck but sucks pulling out a bike carrier or trailer to haul dirt bikes so I got a pickup.

If you want to go nuts get a programmer like an edge evo where it has a read out. It would drive me crazy when I would put the average mpg on cause you would watch it go up and down so I just gave up and switched it to a different screen. I know I'm screwed going to work cause of the lights and stupid people. On the highway if I wanna get good mileage then I'll drive 65-70 but half the time I'm up to 75-80 and at those speeds I know it's sucking gas pretty good. With 35s and 3.55 gears I think I'm averaging about 14 mpg. 3.73 gears would be pretty good with 33s and if if you want better mileage get a 4 cylinder.

Well I have a 2011, so I also have an instant MPG read out. And i'm well aware that a 4 cylinder gets better gas mileage. But thanks for your help.

I'd recommend a tuner (I have the Edge) for anyone.
I've heard more than one person say they use the edge on their 5.4L. Are the 5.0's also seeing those types of gains?
