I'm sorry to hear, nobody deserves to have something they work hard for stolen. I hope things can go as smoothly as possible for you with the whole situation.
back in 2002 a friend of mine had bought a loaded limited Explorer. The day he got it, he parked in the driveway in a nice area with 56 miles on the truck. As he had done for years prior he left his keys in the cup holder and the truck unlocked. when he woke up the next day it was gone, the police found it about 150 miles away stuck in a river bank, they had off road and beat it to death until they got it stuck and the engine was making horrible noises. they then broke every window out of it, cut every seat and the headliner with a knife. the truck was a total loss with less then 300 miles on it. Insurance did give him a hard time with the keys being left in it but eventually paid for everything.

back in 2009 I had a brand new f150 xlt 4x4 scab that was stolen out of my driveway. I had it for about three months and they had to order me the spare key to it because they couldn't locate it at the dealership. I had gotten it that day on an oil change and forgot it was in there. they broke out my window found the key and took off. left me an old bmx bike with no seat in its place, talk about adding injury to insult. I was ticked. I called the insurance everyday for three weeks to see if they had deemed it non recoverable. got it replaced for more than I paid for it. they paid msrp and I had all the incentives and rebates plus was good friends with the dealer at the time. got a 2010 fx4 scab and two weeks later the police found it, got in a high speed pursuit and lost the guy because he cut through a field. some of the cops are not very bright in my town. the guy dumped it not even a half mile from my house. what was really annoying was that it was a brand new model year, customized with a heavy dult grill guard, rims tires, nerf bars with a busted out window and was driving around my town breaking into other peoples stuff for over a month and no one ran the plates not to mention getting into a highspeed pursuit and losing him. took the police over an hour to get to my house once it was reported. then after they took my statement and accused me of stealing it or having it repossessed, his final comments were, " thanks for the information im going to go look for it right now." I got a shower waited for my mom to come pick me up to take me to the farm to borrow the farm truck to drive to work which was about another hour. I leave my house come around the block and the cop is sitting in his car laughing and talking on his cell phone. I pulled up beside him and asked if hed had any luck and drove off without an answer I was not a very happy camper.
When they found it it was snowing and 230 in the am and wanted me to come down and identify it. I was like um does it have plate number this.... yes, big black grill guard on the front?......yes, last for four the vin number this?......... yes. its my truck. sir we need you as the owner to come identify it in person. officer im not the owner state farm is...... call them. im going to bed. goodnight. that was the last I saw of it till it sold at auction and the new owner called me wanting the code to the door. which I thought was funny but I gave it to him. he said the guy burned holes in the seats with cigarettes, scratched it all up when he went thought the fence and bent a shock and tore off the nerf bar. so I was happy they didn't find it. good luck to you. hope it all works out.

What ever you do, DON'T, I repeat, DO NOT tell your insurance company that you left a key in the vehicle. They will deny your claim guaranteed. It's considered negligence as an owner to leave a key in a vehicle and you'll be on the hook for the truck if it's damaged or totaled.

Like many things in life, Darwin's Law rules. People near us keep getting things taken out of unlocked vehicles. I keep laughing.
Years ago a neighbor gave me crap for locking my vehicles in the garage. We had small kids. Their kids got in their car on the driveway and popped it out of Park (console shift) and the young one tried to stop it by running behind it and pushing. I screamed, ran over, and grabbed him away. Car went down driveway, across road, and part way up the lawn of the neighbor across the street. When the wife came out in shock, I said "LOCK YOUR CAR, IT'S NOT A TOY FOR YOUR KIDS". Darwin's Law shouldn't mean your kids suffer because you're not smart.
Lock your car. Take your keys. Take your wallet.
I just installed the tailgate lock last week.

To me, that's like hanging a sign that says "I stored something valuable in here". Also, how does it hold up to salt and snow?
