I'm on the 6 / 12 year plan. 5 years to pay it off and 1 year of continued payments to myself for an additional down payment on top of the outgoing vehicle I'm trading. We always have 1 vehicle in warranty (we get the extended warranties) . The wife's '05 Durango (bought it at the first of '06) was her last new vehicle and she will be getting her new one in 5 more years. I got mine last year so it needs to last me for 11 more. I find that this works best for me. Now if I won the lottery and had money to burn I doubt I would trade every year but I'm sure I'd be buying more than once a year and I would need a much, much bigger garage.

We are normally on 10 year plans with each vehicle. Wife's Passat is turning 9 in a couple of months, so something is going to be replaced soon.
I felt bad for trading my previous truck after a short 6 years of ownership, but we needed a bigger tow vehicle. Oh well.
From a strictly financial point of view it really does not make sense to trade/replace early. Hard earned money is gone very quickly. I am glad that I learned/understood that early. As a result, we never really financed a vehicle after the first two, it helps to have no payments.
That said, what are the options you are after in the 2012, EBinMT? At this time, it may be worth it to push back the trade until the model comes out in maybe MY2014? I did like the addition of the 36 gallons on my 2012, and the hill start assist, though, I have to say. Anyway, good luck with whatever you do!

dude my buddy and his brothers were in a chevy one for like 1.5 seconds, and he was making a $1000/month for about 24 months as long as the thing aired somewhere in the US. his dad had a 500k truck, his brother a 200k and then him (some crap about a chevy family they tried swinging)

Just because someone pays cash for a new car every year doesn't make it finacially right either. Not much difference between the guy making payments and trading in every year or the guy that pays cash every year. You still have a loss. Say you lose $4000.00 by trading in a paid for truck. It's no different than some one making a $333.00 payment for the year.

I try to look at it this way. If someone hadn't done the same thing with the truck I now own, I wouldn't have saved about ten grand, and still been under warranty. Thank you 'new truck every year man,' where ever you are.
