Toyo Open Country A\T II

Just replaced the OEM Wrangler SRA P275/65-18 on my 2011 F150 XLT SCREW with 52K miles with LT285/65-18. These are in the extreme series.
I wanted a slight size increase, and got that. However I also lost 2 mpg, getting 15-16 now with mostly highway mpg vs 17-18.
They also hum pretty loud compared to the stock SRAs on the highway at anything 60 mph or more.
Kind of disappointed. I have the non extreme version on a 2005 Dodge 3500 (obvioulsy different size) but even with 6 tires rolling on the ground, I never noticed a hum from these tires in the non extreme version.
I am surprised so many guys don't report any noise from the AT2 extreme. Perhaps depends on what you were running before.
The OEM tires were definitely quiet. Just too soft side wall for the towing I do, and wanted a good AT tire vs. a highway tread.
I'll keep these for the 60K or so it will take to wear them out.....in retrospect would have been better (for me) to stay with non extreme version.

I'll drop back in and update on my 275/55/20's.. They are coming off soon, right now they have 64K on them and most are down to 3/32's.
A good mix of long highway miles, city pavement pounding, and lots of time with a trailer in tow I have zero complaints in the dry pavement department or how they performed when loaded. About 3.5 years of use and just about the advertised mileage, no complaints there either. The tires have taken a beating with lots of back road driving, they are sliced and chunked in a few places but never a puncture. Always balanced perfectly and DT always complimented how well they balanced and how perfectly round Toyo was able to manufacture them.
the downside came as they aged.. They left a lot to be desired in the snow/rain performance area after about 45k. They are not a snow rated tire, I knew that, and when new they did fairly good in snow and no issue with rain. As they aged though no matter how I drove in the snow they slide everywhere, even in the lightest dusting. The Cooper HTP's on my Wife's SUV put them to shame even prior to replacement last fall. As they have aged driving in the rain has become downright dangerous, luckily we are in the midst of intensifying drought since 9/17 so rain is not much of a concern right now.
If i went with them again I would pull them well ahead of the 65K mileage guarantee. That said I am shopping around and considering the Toyo's alongside the BFG KO2 and others in the stock size for the next set.

I don’t usually let my tires go that far, occassionally I will even get a little trade in on them if the tread is lower than I like and fall is coming around.

I won't give them that chance again, but being a long time Toyo fan I wanted to see if they could get the advertised 65K, what that tread depth looked like, and how they performed. These are the first Toyo AT's I have run, prior trucks always had Toyo MT with zero issues.
You can get to 65K as advertised, but I wouldn't recommend it at all. The snow performance was also a let down, In my opinion, for an AT tire. Discount recommends replacement of tires at 4/32 these days, last wear bar on these Toyos is at 2/32.

Boost :)
I've had mine on for about 45k miles now and they still look and drive great on dry pavement, but are beyond awful in wet or any other type of condition. They are definitely louder than some AT tires, but not too much for me. I haven't measured tread depth, but they look great.
I am debating just replacing now or waiting for later this year, at which point they will be closer to that 65k rating. Definitely going with Falken WildPeaks. Considerably cheaper and rated quite a bit better.

Agreed. I think the street life is good due to the hardness of the rubber compound, which is also what makes them slick in the rain.

So I'm digging up this old thread wanting to know if the Toyo Open Country tire did well by you guys? I'm looking at the 275/70R18 diameter to put on my stock wheels.
Thanks a lot.
Thanks a lot.

I've used these tires for a long time. I even wrote a detailed review. You can also browse my guide if you want: Toyo Open Country At2 Review
