Default towing

hey guys and gals, I have a question about towing. i have a 2010 f150 xlt without a tow package. i have put a hitch on it i'm still using the four pin. the hitch i put on is a class III. my truck has a 3.31 rearend. how much can i safely tow. I'm thinking of putting a seven pin in along with the factory four pin. any info would be great.

will i be able to tow 3500 lbs?

How much you can tow depends on several factors. 2 or 4 wheel drive, gear ratio, engine, reg / scab, or screw cab....

However, the lowest tow rating available on a 2009 / 10 F150 is 5100 pounds. That's a super crew, 4x2, 157" wheelbase, and 4.6L engine with 3.55 gears.

If you know all that information, you can look up yourself here.

Also keep in mind to watch out for tongue weights. That's a topic mostly reserved for travel trailers and heavy loads.

But for 3500 pounds, that's no problem for any of the trucks.

Wow, a 56 Fairlane? Awesome car. And heavy. I towed a full size pickup, the only problem will be tongue weight. Just pay close attention to how you load the trailer, try to keep as much of the weight over the axles as you can and you should be ok.

i rechecked my hitch and its actually a class 5 rated at 12000 lbs. yeah i think is a bad *** car, although not at the moment. it numbers matching with orginal 80k on the clock. i am not sure if i want to sell it or fix it up.

The hitch on your truck is not your weak link. Everything from engine to transmission to axles to springs and shocks determine your towing capacity. I've got the same hitch on my truck and can only tow 9600 pounds.

I still think you'll be ok as long as you keep most of the weight on the axles and take it easy while driving.
