Default Torque App

I would like to get my truck set up with the torque app. My plan is to use my current phone (Motorola razr) since I will be ditching that phone next month for a new phone with a new carrier.

I'm thinking I'll download the app before I cancel my plan with my current phone and mount it in the truck, permanently. Do I need any other equipment to make this set up work?

Is that the best one to get? I found a Vgate ELM 327 that says its specifically for the Torque App for Android...

I also found a BAFX adaptor.

I have
this one this one
. There are probably better ones but the price is right. It does disconnect every once in awhile. Haven't figured out if it's the app or adapter's fault.

The quality of the ODB adapter will have an impact on how fast data is transmitted from the adapter to the phone. Faster is better so that you don't miss short duration events.

One of the better ones is this:

But it is pricey.

I've been using one of the generic adapters for a couple of years with no issues to speak of.

If I was using it to tune a vehicle or for my job, I'd probably spring for one of the more expensive units. I would get one of the low profile adapters though. In some vehicles the placement of the OBD port makes the adapter prone to being knocked off and broken (half the plastic shield around the plug on mine is gone).
