Tire Questions: ride, mpg, acceleration
Guys
I just joined this site today, but have been reading for a while. I would appreciate some feedback about the perfomance of heavier tires. I have a 2013 Lariat S Crew 4x4 offroad package with 5.0 & 3.55 gears ordered. I know there are a lot of threads out there about tires, but I have a few more specific questions.
I am going to level the front, but still want to keep a little rake, so I'm not exactly which kit to go with.
I have decided that 275/70 r18 is the size of tires I will go with, but not sure which tire will be the best for me. 90 % of my driving is done on road, but I do like to take my trucks camping, fishing, and hunting; and sometimes that calls for driving through some rough or sloppy stuff. I want a tire that will give me a little off road traction, without slowing my acceleration and killing my mpg. I rarely need to haul heavy loads, so towing capacity is not really a consideration.
I have pretty much narrowed it down to BFG Rugged Trail, Rugged Terrain, or All Terrain TA KO.
Stock tires are Goodyear Wrangler SRA 275/65 r18 = P rated 39lbs.
Rugged Trail = only P rated tire in this size, only weighs 46 lbs or 7lbs heavier than stock. Not as aggresive tread pattern. This tire should give me the smoothest ride, best mpg, and not slow the acceleration down as much, but I'm a little worried about off road traction and flats.
Rugged Terrain = LT E 52lbs or 13 lbs heavier than stock. Medium aggressive tread. Kind of a compromise between the two.
All Terrain TA KO = LT E 57lbs or 18lbs heavier than stock. Aggresive tread. I have these tires on my Jeep and like them, but they will make the ride pretty stiff and are heavy - hurting mpg and acceleration.
My question is how much will the extra weight affect mpg and acceleration of the 5.0. I know some people say its like adding 50 lbs to the bed of your truck, but I know a little more about physics than to fall for that. Getting more weight spinning away from the center of rotation takes alot more power than just adding overall weight to the truck.
Has anybody run these tires with the 5.0 and 3.55? How did it affect you mpg and felt acceleration. I love the looks of the agressive tires, but don't want make my new truck drive really stiff and kill mpg or acceleration.
Any feedback or pictures would be really appreciated!
Thanks!

My conclusion regarding tires is, either stick with the stock sized p-rated tire or get the biggest tire you can shoe horn in that will make you happy. It seems like the guys that decided to be cautious and conservative by compromising with a 275/70/18 are seeing the same MPG drop as people running taller/wider tires, 2-3 mpg.

Thanks Bylons!
That is exactly what i am afraid of, was the mpg drop more than 2? What are you getting mpg?
Sure does look good, just not sure it's worth turning my truck into a dog though?!
How is the ride comfort?

Thanks for the feedback GGG. How much mpg drop did you get with the rugged terrains?
Did you notice a big loss in acceleration, and then put on the K&N kit and got it back? Am i reading this right?
The crazy thing about 275/70 r18 is all three tires i listed are the same price.

No the loss of accelartion is from driving our FX4 5.4 we still have, now its compareable if not better then i added the tires and it goes....the 2000 rpm band where it gets up and go stock - to the 5.4 stock and with the 5.0 and 6speed trans it now has lost the the throttle lag you punch it and it sets back in the seat as much as the 5.4 does now.
Tire rack I got mine for 250.00 a tire out of the 3 id stay away from the trails have buddies who have had them and hated them and went to the terrians becuase I had them, but these rugged seem alot better quieter, softer ride, handle better better in rain, more aggressive in person.. just what ive experenced.....

My stock tires were 275/55r20 ( 31.9" ) and put on 275/65r20 ( 34.1" ) and the truck has gotten more " sluggish " but nothing a tuner can't fix. But call me crazy but I think my mpgs have either stayed the same or gotten better but they nitto's and they weigh 59 pounds. The traction tho is way way way better. It just snowed last night and it was in 2wd the whole time trail riding and it was super grippy. All I can say is my truck is still stock so I can vouch 34.1 will definitely fit with no rubbing what so ever. Get what u want the mpgs will be close enough and I yeah I have 3.73 so maybe that's y I'm fine idk.
