Default thinking of buying 2010

hello I came across a 2010 f150 fx4 It has almost all options available for that year and is in pretty good shape it has the 5.4 now It has high miles ( 200k ) do these trucks hold up or is that a lot of miles? I play to get this to replace my 2500 ram diesel with since I don't really need it as I don't tow much and need something more daily freindly I know most people rather the 2011+ but I can get this for $9500 which sounds like a deal to me!

I'd try to get it for less. I paid 12,5 for mine, had 146k on the clock, a bunch of options including the off road package and 36 gal tank, fx4 might be flashier inside I suppose. They think it has more value since its the new body, and buyers should knock its barter it down saying it has the 5.4 still.

I will see what he says but he seemed firm, This has the locking rear end and the sunroof which are two options I really like.

I would wait and get a year newer, The newer engines are well worth the wait!

What year is your Ram? Does the previous owner have any maintenance records? Anything replaced? Those are a lot of miles on a 5.4. I would pass.

I second this. My previous 09 5.4 I purchased came from being impatient. It may have been a good truck for the time I had it but I had a constant thought of wishing I had waited to save an extra couple months for a 5.0/eco. The 5.0 is years ahead of the 5.4.. And from experience the 5.0 seems a bit easier to work on and has a bit less issues. Again from personal experience. Not speaking for everyone. But I think the vast majority would agree.

My current truck is a 05 great truck but getting older and don't like driving a manual everyday. He claims he has service records and that everything was maintained over the years

I've driven very high miles vehicles before, and if I were you, and I'm not, I'd buy it for a little less, and drive away with the expectation that things will go wrong with it, as all vehicles do, even Fords.

Belt tensioners, tie-rod ends, U-joints, carrier bearings, blend door motors, transmissions, etc. can fail on lower miles cars, doubly so at 200k miles.

My wife's' 1996 Windstar had 162k on it, and I had a funeral to go back to in Iowa, and I told her before we left, that this would be it's last trip across the plains with that many miles. Sure enough, at midnight, 30 miles from Mitchell, SD the belt tensioner fails, costs me a day, a tow, a motel room, equalling $700, and I still had the old van.

I traded it off on the pickup.

I's probably be a buyer at $7500 - if you really like the truck !

I just picked up a 2010 fx4 with 45k miles from original owner for 15k, granted I think i get a great deal but I am sure you could get him lower. If not I would look at newer model.

Depending on where you are it may or may not be a good deal. Trucks in general are holding their value extremely well, to the point I know guys who have traded in their vehicle and been offered a trade value equal to what they paid brand new 3 years prior. With that high of miles, I'd probably pass but then again if it's what you're looking to spend....

I will say the 5.4 is a great motor with the 6 speed transmission and that fx4 will have the 3.73 gears which is the only way I'd own one here on out. That said, they do have issues with cam phasers and timing chain tensioners that are expensive to repair. They also have exhaust manifold leaks, worse if you live where they salt the roads in winter.

Now, who knows, with those miles it could have been rebuilt at least once already and run like new (rebuilt as in New timing chain, tensioners, cam phasers and vct solenoids). Get it warm and listen for diesel sounds coming from the motor. Listen close on a cold start up for clattering noise which indicates failed timing chain tensioners. Take it to a mechanic you trust and have them give it a through once over before laying any money on the table.
