Theft Deterrent - Body Panel Etching

OK! In all fairness, the dealer called me. He explained, that the removal of the sticker leaves an etching in the paint. If the vehicle is not recovered, there is a deduction on insurance premiums, as well as a "cash back" of $5,000 to be applied toward the purchase of a new vehicle (or some such). I suppose, the new vehicle would have "stickers".
So, maybe it has some teeth.

I don't think dealers can make generalizations about individual insurance company practices. This doesn't make any sense. How does he know your insurance company gives a rats *** about this system? And who pays the $5k back? Did he give you a written policy to this effect underwritten by a legitimate company? I still call BS.

Right. And how long is the owner obligated to wait for the vehicle to be recovered. What stipulations are there on the use of the $5k? Who is the check made out to (dealer, insurance, or owner)? And why is etched paint in some obscure location on a body panel considered insurance? Any chop shop will be able to defeat this overly simple security measure with minimal effort.
If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck...
I'll never pay my own money for this "system".
