Like I said, I think there is more to the story as I've had people pull and pry on it trying to get the step out and mine has been fine and this is the first I've heard of one snapping off.

Most people don't realize you have to tilt it to unlatch it and try to pull and pry.

The whole Ford sending pictures to Dearborn is ridiculous for anything other than a major failure. I still can't comprehend how Ford dealerships are not allowed to make a decision on their own- basic mechanical knowledge should tell you if it was abused or not, then make the call....
OP- I hope you can get it fixed.

Things break. Even parts that are not common to break do break to some.. its just like a few engines blow, especially when the truck is bone stock, should ford just say 'well, that doesn't happen very much so we will not cover it'??? Its a plastic part. Even if I did break it from 'normal' use it should be covered from the 36k 60 month btb coverage. After the new car warranty expires.. Then I would agree with ford in not replacing it.

I'm not saying it shouldn't but saying that I think there is more to the story due to the infrequency of this happening.

I also feel if YOU break something in your truck then YOU should be accountable and not pass it on to the consumers by trying to claim warranty. Now if is broke for an obvious defect then that is a different story but if I'm sliding a heavy box out and catch that piece and I rip it off then I will find a way to get a new one as it was my fault for not clearing it.

Built ford tough. Lol.

If they really believe their motto they should stand behind the customer and get it fixed already.

Not so ridiculous if you realize it's to combat fraud. I'm sure many people have damaged things and tried to get them claimed under warranty. Or had an accident and tried to get Ford to cover it.

I've had a few trim pieces replaced on my Taurus - tail lights 3x for peeling chrome (a known issue on 2010's) and each time the dealer had to send pics to Ford.

I had a whistling noise that the body guy traced back to a messed up trim piece on the passenger side. They took a bunch of pics of the car and Ford paid for that one too. Didn't fix the issue but I was at 36,500 and let it slide. I think it's a cowling issue and I'll address it in the spring.

So, yes Ford will cover this stuff if it's clear it was not damaged but a genunie defect. Or I have an awesome dealer (IMHO they are very good).

Well then everything that goes wrong under warranty is YOUR fault then. Using something for what it was designed is what the warranty is for. There is a difference between abuse and regular use. So if I were to break that plastic part through normal use. Ford to stand behind it under warranty.

That is crazy, should be covered IMO. Not covering something small like that really hurts ford's reputation especially in this day and age with forums like this. I cant really see how a tailgate step would be misused and this being blamed on the op. It should be built ford tough especially based on its location in the tailgate and should be able to handle significant abuse from loading the bed etc... Otherwise they shouldn't offer it on a truck

No, if you try opening it wrong or drag a heavy item and catch it, it's your fault not the manufactures. A warranty isn't if something breaks while it's whiting warranty, it's for defects in materials and manufacturing.

That piece isn't designed to catch as you drag something out of the bed so would not be covered.

People always trying to pass the buck and not accept responsibility, crazy.

To my knowledge the OP never stated how it broke. For all we know it could have come apart in his hands. I think I will reserve judgement before accusing him of warranty fraud...........
