Default Tire Pressure Question..........

Hi!
I've got a '17 F150 SC with the 2.7 eco motor. It is a daily driver, not used for towing or heavy hauling. The truck is equipped with the Hankook tires, and they have a max pressure stated at 51 psi. The decal on the door frame indicates 43 psi "cold". As I am a certified vehicle nut, the tires are all set at 43 psi cold.

Normally I do my own routine maintenance. But I had a free oil change coming from Ford and took it in this morning. I have to say they did a great job, even running the truck thru the washer. I did notice - among other things - that the tech adjusted the tire pressure. When I drove home, I noticed all four tires were at 36-37 psi.

So my question is, what is the proper pressure? Is the door decal incorrect? Or did the tech just adjust the pressure incorrectly?

Your thoughts please!

Door jamb is recommended pressure. I'd ask why he changed it.

I looked at the sticker again.......... it reads 43 psi for both front and rear, BUT it reads 36 psi for the spare. Perhaps the tech saw that and ran with it?

Yessir. I'm with you: Use the cold inflation pressures listed on your truck's door jamb, providing you're running that tire or a very-similar tire size and load rating.

Anything's possible. You won't know until you ask.

The tpms is set to the door sticker, the tech could have had a bad gauge.

Ahhh, problem resolved......... the tech saw the "36 psi" for the spare tire and used that for the 4 driving tires. Tires are now back up to 43 psi, and I got another free oil change coupon............

Thanks all for your input. I "knew" the right answer, but was second guessing myself.

I had the opposite problem. I have the Hankooks and 20” wheels and the cold psi on the door jamb is 35 and the techs inflated them to 43-46 when they delivered it.

I guess what I’ve learned from my experience is always check the pressure after someone else works on it lol.

Sounds like different sized tires on the F150 call for different pressures (makes sense). That said, I "assume" that the rule is to use the number on the vehicles door decal - given that the tires have not been changed out for another size............

Yup. Ford puts that pressure on their based on the equipped tires so I would follow it. Mine had an extremely rough ride with 43-46psi but went to feeling like a Cadillac at the suggested 35psi.
